Plates, dishes, and the like, washing.-Dishes &c. are placed in a vertical cylindrical cage 6 which is rotated within a tank 1 by successive jets of water and of air, supplied from a pump 10 and blower 39, alternately driven from the same electric motor 33, acting on the dishes which thus serve as paddles. The water is withdrawn from the tank by a duct 8 leading to a heater 9 and, after passing through a strainer 12, is pumped through vertical and horizontal perforated pipes 30, the angular positions of which can be varied to determine the direction of rotation of the cage and to enable the dishes to be washed on both sides. A hollow waste and overflow pipe 17 in the heater is prevented from being lifted until the gas cock 15 is moved out of the way of the pipe to shut off the supply of gas to the burner 16. A float-operated valve prevents the supply of fuel until the heater contains a sufficient quantity of water and an audible signal is given when such a state is reached. Alternatively a similarly-controlled electric or other heating device may be used. A coil through which cold water is passed may be immersed in the heated water in the heater so that the water in the coil is heated rapidly for use in washing the dishes the other water being used in rinsing them so that no delay occurs in the use of the apparatus in houses without a hot-water supply. Air is withdrawn from the tank by a duct 40 and is passed by the pump 39 through a pipe 41 to impinge on the dishes. Manually controlled clutches between the motor shaft and the pump and blower are provided and other clutches may be provided to enable the motor to drive other apparatus. The machine may be provided with a wooden cover to serve as a table, a portion of the cover being pivoted to give access to the interior of the cage.
