Belts and bands.-In a, driving belt in which a continuous belt or separate friction pads are carried by a metal link chain, the carrying elements or driving blocks of the chain are formed of sheet metal and comprise vertical inverted U-shaped portions b with lateral extensions c bent outwardly at right angles and terminating in flanges d which afford lateral support to the frictional elements h held on pins i. Flat links f entering the U- shaped portions of the driving blocks are articulated thereto by joint pins e, the spaces between the rounded ends of the links preferably being filled by lubricating pads g. The space x between the parts c allows lateral yielding to crown pulleys. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, separate friction pads are carried by the chain elements but a continuous belt may be carried thereby as shown in Fig. 5 in which case by forming inclined ends on the flanges d and suitably arranging the height and spacing of the joint pins e, the belt is allowed to buckle outwards between the driving blocks when bent round a small pulley.
