Furnace details. - In an electrode 1 which is baked in the furnace in which it is used and is provided with a metallic casing 2, the casing is made wholly or partly of thin metal and is removed by stripping from the solid portion of the electrode before the latter enters the furnace. The electrode holder 3, which may comprise a plurality of members shaped as shown in Fig. 2 and mounted in a ring-shaped holder, may be clamped directly to the baked portion to make good electrical contact therewith so as to make optional the use of internal metal conducting ribs in the electrode. The metal casing is provided with longitudinal grooves to facilitate stripping when the casing as the electrode is pushed through the holder. Dimensions of the casing ana internal ribs for an electrode used in the manufacture of aluminium are given in the Specification, the ribs being of iron or aluminium. In an alternative arrangement the holder parts are provided with a knife edge at their lower ends and the casing is provided with spiral grooves so that it can be torn off in strips after passing through the holder.
