Abstract

A lockable fuel shut-off valve for a motor vehicle incorporates electrical contacts 15 to operate ancillary electrical circuits. e.g. illuminate indicators, disable the ignition system, activate alarm systems, or operate other electrical circuits. An operating stem 12 of a lock device 11 is coupled to a rotatable valve closure member 14 and carries a cam 13 which co-operates with the electrical contacts 15. Seals are located at either side of the valve closure member 14 to preclude leakage of fluid or gas. By operating the look by means of a key the stem 12 is rotated through 90 degrees. This action turns the cam 13, closing or opening the electrical contacts, thus making or breaking a circuit, whilst at the same time opening or closing the valve. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION ANTI-THEFT DEVICE FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE This invention relates primarily to an anti-theft device for a motor vehicle, but may be used where fluids or gases need to be securely valved whilst providing ancillary electrical circuits.
There are many devices known or in use for shutting of gas or fluid supplies to an engine as there are switches for driving electrical circuits but none combine the two elements together.
According to the present invention there is provided a unit which is capable of securely shutting of the fuel supply to an engine whilst providing a switchable electrical circuit to render inoperative the ignition system of such engine or provide indicators to its mode of operation.
The anti-theft device for a motor vehicle comprises of a body (10) into which is fitted a locking device (11). On the rotating stem (12) of the locking device (11) a cam (13) is securely fitted. The end of the rotating stem (12) fits into the valve spindle (14), so that when the locking device stem (12)is rotated the cam (13) and the valve spindle (14) move in unison with this movement.
The locking device (11) is augmented so that it has a radial movement restricted to 90 degrees. In the open position the valve spindle (14) has an aperture (A) through it which allignes with two apatures (B) and (C) in the valve body (10) thus allowing the flow of fluid or gas to be uninterrupted from position (X) to position (Y) or visa versa. The cam (13) operating the switch contacts at (15) can have the contacts in an open or closed position.
By operating the locking device through 90 degrees the cam(13) and the valve spindle (14) work in unison with this movement bringing the cam (13) to bear against the contacts in switch (15) thus opening or closing the circuit, whilst moving the aperture (A) in the valve spindle (14) away from the two apertures (B) and (C) in the body (10) providing an effective barrier to the flow of gas or fluid from position (X) to position (Y). Two seals (16) are positioned at the interface of apatures (A-B) and (A-C) to prevent leakage around the valve spindle (14) and the body (10).

Claims (2)

1. A lockable shut of valve primarily for motor vehicles which incorporates electrical contacts to operate ancillary electrical circuits. e.g. illuminate indicators, disable or enable electrical circuits, or operate alarm systems., whilst allowing or blocking the passage of fluids or gasses through the valve.
2. A lockable shut of valve as claimed in Claim 1 wherein an internal combustion engine can be securely deprived of fuel.
