Abstract

An overhead pusher mechanism (1) will push a product into an erected carton, and side rollers or belts (3) are positioned near to the entry of the carton in order to drive the product into the carton. This overcomes the friction of the product against the carton side walls. By coupling the overhead pusher directly to the side rollers or belts, it ensures the peripheral speed of the rollers or belts is at all times the same as the linear speed of the overhead pushers. <IMAGE>

Description

OVRHE:AD I?tJSH1s:E2 W I TII S I D E DIVE: DESCRIPTION This invention refers to an overhead pusher mechanism with side rollers or belts. An overhead pusher mechanism will form part of a packaging machine.
Usually the product will be placed onto a conveyor and the product is transported along and pushed into an erected carton by bars. This method of loading does not fully push the product into the carton, with each end of the batches especially vulnerable to being held back due to rubbing against the carton sides. This necessitates a second stage pusher which only achieves a moderate carton load.
According to the present invention the overhead pusher (1) is mounted on a carriage (2), which can travel up and down in the vertical plane and backwards and forward in the horizontal plane. The operational sequence being that the pusher comes down vertically behind the batch of products, then travels forwards horizontally pushing the products into the carton. After loading the products it travels back horizontally to a fixed position, where it then travels vertically upwards above the product height while still travelling back in the horizontal plane. When it reaches an agreed position it stops ready to repeat the sequence.
The purpose of the two side rollers or belts(3) which are positioned near to the entry of the carton is to drive the products each end of the stack into the carton, overcoming the friction of the product against the carton side walls.
By coupling the overhead pusher directly to the side rollers it ensures the peripheral speed of the rollers or belts is at all times the same as the linear speed of the overhead pusher.
By using the overhead pusher with side rollers or belts, a clean load is achieved and the problem of product being held back due to rubbing on the carton sides is overcome.

Claims (1)

  1. OVERHAD PUSHER WITH
SIDE DRIVE CLAIMS An overhead pusher mechanism with a fixed or adjustable rate of travel to load product fully in the carton, together with side rollers or belts to drive products at each end of the batch into the carton, the peripheral speed of the rollers or belts being such that it is matched with the linear speed of the overhead pusher at all times.
