Abstract
227,249. Pilkington Bros., Ltd., and Le Mare, E. B. Nov. 19, 1923. Glass-annealing leers.-Relates to the manufacture of glass sheet in a conntinuous strip and consists in preventing the warping of the strip, which is liable to take place during cooling and solidification, by controlling the relative rates of cooling of the upper and lower surfaces of the strip to secure symmetrical cooling before the glass solidifies. A leer for carrying out the process is shown in longitudinal section in Fig. 1 and in transverse section in Fig. 2, and comprises a bed of rollers 2 on which the glass strip 1 rests during its passage through the leer. Five muffles 6, 7, 8 are disposed below the strip and three muffles 4, 5 are disposed above it, the muffles being supplied with hot gases by means of flues 9, 10, 11. The top muffles are independently heated and they are also connected to exhaust flue 15, 16 at the point of the leer at which the strip 1 has become solidified throughout, the bottom muffles being continued to the end of the leer and there connected to an exhaust flue in the usual way. The relative rates of cooling of the upper and lower surfaces of the glass strip can be controlled by varying the pull in the exhaust flues by means of dampers and by varying the amount of heating gases introduced into all or any of the flues 9, 10, 11. The method of control may be modified by extending the top muffles to the end of the leer and by terminating the bottom muffles at or after the solidification point of the glass.
