Abstract
A shopping trolley 12 has its front castors 15 connected together by a tension spring 17 in such a way that the spring force biases the castor wheels towards the straight ahead position whilst still allowing sideways movement by the application of a force to the side of the trolley. A means is provided to lift the front wheels clear of the ground when the trolley is nested in a group of stacked trolleys. <IMAGE>
Description
SHOPPING TROLLEY
This invention relates to a shopping trolley.
Shopping trolleys are renowned for their refusal to steer straight ahead on demand, According to the present invention there is provided a shopping trolley with its front castor wheels connected together by a tension spring in such a way that the force in the spring biases the castor wheels towards the straight ahead position whilst still allowing sideways movement by the application of a force to the side of trolley. Ramps are provided on the trolley to lift the front wheels clear of the ground when the trolley is nested in a stacked group.
A specific embodiment of tbe invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig 1 is a diagrammatic plan view of a shopping trolley.
Fig 2 shows the side elevation of a front castor.
Fig 3 shows the front elevation of a front castor.
Fig 4 illustrates an alternative fixing at the ends of the spring.
Fig 5 shows a stacked group of trolleys.
Fig 6 shows a typical ramp and spigot.
Referring to Fig 1 the shopping trolley comprises, amongst other things, a trolley 12, two back castors 13 free to turn about their vertical axes 14 and two front castors 15 restrained about their vertical axes 16 by a tension spring 17. The axis of the spring 17 lies in a vertical plane through the axes 16 when the wheels 18 are pointing in the forward direction and trailing behind the axes 16. The force of the tension spring 17 can be overcome by applying a sideways load to the trolley 12.
Fig 4 shows an alternative fixing 19 at the ends of the spring 17 in the form of a fork end screwed into the spring. Spring brackets 22 as shown in Figs 2 & 3 could be integral with the castors 15 or be separate pieces fixed by the spindle bolts 23.
Referring to Fig 5 the shopping trolley 12 when in a stacked group of trolleys 24 has the front wheels raised above the pavement so that a group of trolleys can be manoeuvred as at present without having to overcome all the front castor springs 17.
Ramp or ramps 20 and spigot or spigots 21. See Fig 6 are mounted on the front bottom or front sides of the trolley basket so that the front wheels 18 are lifted about 8mm above the pavement whilst the trolley 12 is being correctly stacked in the group 24.
Claims (4)
1 A shopping trolley incorporating a means of biasing the front castor wheels towards the straight ahead position whilst allowing for some sideways movement.
2 A shopping trolley as claimed in Claim 1 that uses a spring stretched between the front castors.
3 A shopping trolley as claimed in Claims 1 & 2 that has a means of raising the front wheels off the pavement so that a group of stacked trolleys is manoeuvreable.
4 A shopping trolley substantially as described herein with reference to
Figures 1-6 of the accompanying drawings.
