Abstract
A cable ladder comprising two channel-section stringers interconnected by rungs has the bases of the channel- sections facing each other and formed with embossed beads 4, 4' extending at right angles to the general plane of the ladder. The ends of the rungs are welded to the stringers. In preferred arrangements, the beads in each stringer are arranged in pairs and the two ends of each rung are welded to the stringers between the two beads of a pair. <IMAGE>
Description
CABLE LADDERS
The present invention relates to cable ladders. Such a cable ladder comprises two longitudinal stringers or beams, which are often formed with outwardly directed flanges, and which are kept mutually spaced by means of lateral connection members in the form of rungs spaced apart along the length of the cable ladder. Usually, the stringers and/or rungs are formed with apertures in order to save weight and/or to facilitate the attachment of clamps or bolt connections for retaining cables, instrument pipes etc. to the cable ladder.
A disadvantage in known cable ladders of this kind is that they withstand little load within their main plane (horizontal plane - prior to being mounted) without becoming distorted. Also bending strength as well as the torsional strength is deficient.
Therefore, it has been the object of the present invention to construct a cable ladder the general mechanical/static strength of which is increased substantially by simple and inexpensive means.
According to this invention there is provided a cable ladder comprising two longitudinal stringers spaced apart and interconnected by rungs spaced apart along the length of the stringers, the stringers being formed with reinforcing beads extending transversely of the lengthwise dimension of the stringers and at least some of the rungs being secured to the stringers adjacent the beads.
Thus, in preferred embodiments of the invention, the stringers of the cable ladder are formed with reinforcing beads which are formed directly in the plate material, at least some of the cable ladder rungs having their ends welded to the stringers adjacent the reinforcing beads.
Through embossing or stamping or impressing such beads, the bending and torsional strength of the cable ladder is increased substantially in relation to conventional cable ladders of corresponding dimensions.
A further increase in the strength of the cable ladder can be achieved by welding each end of each rung to two adjacent beads, whereby the risk of being bent inwards or outwards is greatly reduced.
However, a sufficient strength and stability increase can be obtained if each rung has each end thereof disposed adjacent one bead or if there is only one bead for each rung end for alternate rungs.
One embodiment of the invention is further explained in the following, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows in a perspective view a portion of a cable ladder constructed in accordance with the invention, seen obliquely from above, and
Figure 2 shows in plan view the cable ladder portion of Figure 1.
The cable ladder shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises two metal longitudinal channel-section stringers 1, 1 disposed with their bases facing each other and having outwardly directed side flanges 2, 2'.
The stringers 1, 1 are, as known, formed with a large number of apertures which are inessential to the present invention and which, therefore, are not denoted by reference numerals.
The stringers 1, 1 of the cable ladder are kept mutually spaced by means of lateral connection members in the form of cable ladder rungs 3, 3'.
The base portions of the stringers 1, 1 are formed with beads 4 which extend transversely of the lengthwise dimension of the stringers and which are impressed or embossed on the plate material of the stringers 1, 1'. The beads are distributed along the length of the stringers 1, 1 . At the impressed side in the drawing, the beads 4 are denoted 4 .
The lateral beads 4, 4 themselves result in a substantial increase in the bending strength and torsional strength of the stringers and, consequently, of the cable ladder.
In the illustrated preferred embodiment of the invention, the reinforcing beads 4, 4 are distributed such that pairs of beads on each stringer 1, 1 i.a. are positioned in the region of the attachment of the cable ladder rungs 3, 3'. Thus, in this embodiment, each end of each rung 3, 3 is welded between the two beads of a pair, resulting in a further increase of the strength and stability of the cable ladder.
However, a sufficient increase of the torsional strength/bending strength of the cable ladder is achieved when the rungs 3, 3 are welded in the region of one bead on each stringer, or when only some of the rungs are welded in the region of such beads.
