Abstract
226,433. McNeil, C. May 21, 1924. Spring supports for the rolls of sugar-cane mills, metal-rolling mills &c., of the type in which the springs used are formed of corrugated or curved plates. Layers of spring elements are placed between the outer half of the roll bearing and a bolster or equivalent, the layers being separated from each other by means of distancepieces which may be in the form of plates, blocks, or rods. As applied to the top roll of a sugarcane mill, spring elements A, Figs. 1 and 2, each consisting of a comparatively narrow corrugated plate of spring material lying parallel to the roll axis, are positioned between the outer half of the roll bearing A' and the bolster A<2>, and distancepieces A<3> in the form of rubbing-plates are inserted between the elements, and a rubbing-plate formed integral with a pressure block is placed between the bearing A<1> and the next adjacent adjacent element A. The relieving-gear is carried in a housing B secured to the headstock B<1> by king-bolts B<2> and bolster A<2>. Or the relieving- gear may be carried in a housing B, Fig. 3, formed in one with the pressure-block A<4> and the whole mounted on the usual king-bolts B' above the bolster A<2> through an aperture in which the pressure-block projects and bears on the roll bearing A<1>. fig. 5 shows the distance-pieces A<3> in the form of blocks on which bear the convex portions of adjacent layers of spring elements A. Or the distance-pieces may be placed so that a convex portion of one layer and a concave portion of the adjacent layer of spring elements bear on the same block. In Fig. 7, the distance-pieces A<@1> are in the form of round bars inserted in the space formed bv the concave portions of adjacent layers of spring elements. In Fig. 8, the round bars are positioned so as to form rollers between the layers, thus reducing the friction.
