Abstract

226,266. Webb & Co., Ltd., H. C., and Atkinson, G. L. Sept. 14, 1923. Control mechanism.-In the invented lever type of operating means for Bowden mechanism passing through cycle handle-bars &c., the hollow sleeve adapted to be secured within the handle-bar end is provided with an integral or detachable central abutment for the Bowden sheath or casing, such abutment being radially slotted to accommodate and permit lateral detachment of the Bowden cable and serving also as a direct stop or abutment for the cable-carrying end of the inverted lever pivoted to arms depending from the hollow sleeve. Several forms of detachable and integral abutment stops are described, detachable stops being shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 6, and an integral stop in Fig. 9. The hollow sleeve a carrying the lever d and secured within the handle-bar end b is formed with a conical bore a<1> terminating in a part accommodating the slotted stop c, which forms the abutment on one side for the Bowden casing and on the other side for the cable-carrying end of the inverted lever d, the stop c and lever-end d' being slatted to enable the cable to be inserted laterally. The stop may be screwed, Fig. 1, or secured by a bayonet-joint such as c<5>, Fig. 4, or by a spring collar d<5>, Fig. 6. In other forms a set screw passes through a flange in the stop c into the sleeve a, or through the sleeve a into an annular groove in the stop c. In the form in which the abutment is integral with the sleeve, the sleeve is shortened, Fig. 9, and may be secured by a band e compressing the split end of the handlebar b thereon, or alternatively the sleeve may be screwed into the handle-bar end or secured by a screw stud.
