Abstract
Security of a door 1 is enhanced by fitting a U-shape channel section 3 of steel to its shutting edge 2 throughout the full door-height, and clamping the limbs 6, 7 of the section 3 together by bolts 8 with the margin of the shutting edge 2 sandwiched between. Rods 9, 10 actuated by a crank mechanism 11 slide upwards and downwards respectively within tubes 12, 13 for fastening the door 1, and are locked by the bolt 18 of a dead lock 17 shot into a slot 19 in the rod 9. The limbs 6, 7 of the channel section 3 are of different lengths, and the tubes 12, 13, the crank mechanism 11 and the dead lock 17 are all mounted on the longer limb 7 on the inside of the door 1. The shorter limb 6 overlaps the edge of a steel facing sheet 5 on the outside of the door 1. As an alternative (Figure 3), two channel sections 23, 24 are provided at the top and bottom respectively, of the door 21 with portions bridging the top and bottom door-edges 27, 28. Bushes 29 for restraining and guiding the boltwork 30, 31 are mounted on the channel sections 23, 24. <IMAGE>
Description
Door Security
This invention relates to door security.
The invention is concerned especially with enhancing the security of doors.
According to one aspect of the present invention a method of enhancing the security of a door, includes the step of fitting a channel section of metal or other security barrier material, to encase the shutting edge of the door closely.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a door fitted with a channel section of metal or other security barrier material to encase the shutting edge of the door closely.
The channel section preferably extends throughout substantially the full door-height, but instead may be fitted to the door to encase the shutting edge of the door closely throughout either a top or a bottom part of the door-height; alternatively, two such sections may be fitted, one to the top, and the other to the bottom of the shutting edge.
The channel section in each case may be secured to the door with bolts that extend through the door and clamp the two limbs of the channel section together with a margin of the door along its shutting edge, sandwiched between them.
The door may be faced, usually on its outside, by a sheet of metal or other barrier material, for security purposes. In these circumstances the sheet is preferably overlapped by one of the limbs of the channel section along a margin of the shutting edge of the door.
The limbs of the channel section may be of different lengths so as to extend by different distances across the two faces of the door from the shutting edge, and boltwork and/or locking facilities for fastening the door may be mounted on the longer of the two limbs. Any such boltwork may be of the cremone, or espagnolette, form having two bolts or rods which extend respectively upwards and downwards of the door from a crank or other actuating mechanism for sliding longitudinally in opposite directions to one another to engage or disengage, according to the sense of operation of the mechanism, with sockets or staples to the top and bottom of the door. In these circumstances, the actuating mechanism, which may form part of a panic release for the door, may be carried by the same limb of the channel section.
According to a further aspect of the present invention a door-security aid comprises a channel section of metal or other security barrier material for fitting to the shutting edge of a door to encase that edge closely throughout substantially the full door-height, and selectively-operable boltwork for fastening the door, said boltwork being mounted, or being adapted to be mounted, on one of the limbs of the channel section.
Doors fitted with security aids to enhance their security in accordance with the present invention, will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away and from the closing side, of a first of the doors as hinged within its frame;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the hinged door of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a front elevation, partly broken away, of the second of the two doors.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the hinged door 1 has a shutting edge 2 that is encased closely by a steel channel section 3 throughout the full door-height. The door 1 opens outwardly with its opening face 4 covered by a steel sheet 5 for security purposes, the steel channel section 3 being added to enhance security.
The limbs 6 and 7 of the U-shape section 3 are of different lengths. The shorter limb 6 is located on the outside of the door 1 and overlaps the sheet 5 along a margin of the shutting edge 2. The longer limb 7 bears on the closing face of the door 1, so that the door 1 with its facing steel sheet 5, is sandwiched between the two limbs 6 and 7 along the shutting-edge margin. Bolts 8 are located at positions spaced from one another throughout the height of the door 1, to extend through the door-thickness and to clamp the two limbs 6 and 7 together tightly onto the steel-faced door 1.
The door 1 is fastened by cremone boltwork that involves two bolts or rods 9 and 10 that extend upwardly and downwardly respectively, from a handle-operable crank mechanism 11 bolted to the limb 7. The rods 9 and 10 are housed throughout a substantial part of their lengths within tubes 12 and 13 respectively, which are welded to the limb 7. Each tube 12 and 13 retains a bushing 14 for guiding longitudinal sliding movement of the respective rod 9 and 10 to engage or disengage, according to the sense of operation of the actuating mechanism 11, with sockets 15 in the top of the door frame 16 and the floor (only the socket 15 in the floor is shown).
A dead lock 17 is also mounted on the limb 7. The lock 17 has a key-actuated bolt 18 that engages with a slot 19 in the rod 9 when the mechanism 11 is in the doorfastening position in which the rods 9 and 10 are fully engaged to hold the door 1 fast from opening. Engagement of the bolt 18 with the slot 19 in this way prevents the mechanism 11 from being operated to allow the door 1 to open. Such engagement may be effected whenever access through the doorway is to be restricted to a key-holder and/or operation of the door 1 is to be linked in with an alarm system. The lock 17 may, in the latter respect, include a microswitch (not shown).
In the above example the U-shape section 3 extends the full height of the door, for maximum security. However, where for economic or other reasons a lesser degree of security is acceptable, the shutting edge of the door may be encased at the top and the bottom of the door only (or at just one or the other of these). A door having the top and bottom of the shutting edge encased in this way is shown in Figure 3, and will now be described.
Referring to Figure 3, the door 21 in this case has its shutting edge 22 fitted with U-shape channel sections 23 and 24 at top and bottom respectively. Each section 23 and 24 has a length of about 200 mm or more, and is clamped by bolts (not shown) to sandwich the door 21 tightly between its limbs, and thereby to encase the shutting edge 22 where it is most vulnerable to attack.
In this respect also, the sections 23 and 24 may have, as illustrated in Figure 3, portions 25 and 26 that bridge the top and bottom edges 27 and 28 respectively of the door 21. The portions 25 and 26 intercouple the limbs of the individual sections 23 and 24, strengthening them and affording protection to the edges 27 and 28 at the top and bottom corners.
The sections 23 and 24 provide firm mounting platforms for bushes 29 that serve to restrain and guide two longitudinally-sliding bolts 30 and 31 for fastening the door 21.
The shutting edge 22 and the top and bottom edges 27 and 28 may be recessed to receive the sections 23 and 24, to maintain straight edges to the door, if desired.
