Abstract
A breather for a gear box or engine comprises a generally tubular body 12 which fits in a gearbox or other casing 24, a cap 14 over one end of the body 12 and a baffle 16 in the form of a helical spring 51 tapered at each end and being held in position in the passage through body 12 by friction. Air flows between the cap 14 and body 12 via gaps 37 in ridge 36. <IMAGE>
Description
A BREATHER
The present invention concerns a breather and, in particular, a breather suitable for use in â vehicle gearbox or engine.
Breathers are known which comprise a breather body member defining a passage and a baffle in the passage for trapping particles passing therethrough, the baffle comprising a slug of wire wool. Such breathers are used in vehicle gearboxes to allow air to escape from the gearbox whilst particles of oil carried in the air are trapped on the baffle and all back into the gearbox.
In sone cases, particularly in small breathers, the slug of wire wooi tends to clog easily, can be difficult to manufacture ana, because of its flexible nature, difficult to locate in the breather body.
The present invention provides breather comprising a bodv retnoer defining a passage and a baffle located tn the passage for trapping particles passing therethrough, the baffle comprising coiled elongate member.
Preferably the baffle is tapered, desirably towards both ends. This enables an effective baffle to be made very simply.
Preferably the elongate member is of a resilient material. This increases the tolerance on the dimensions of the baffle and of the body member.
The baffle may be held in the body member by friction.
This allows for simple fitting and removal of the baffle.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a section through a breather according to the invention.
A breather 10 comprises a body member 12, a breather cap 14 and a baffle o. The body member 12 is senerall tubular, defining a passage 18 therethrough, and has a mounting portIon 20 part way along it. The mounting portion 20 comprIses a thickened tubular part 21 which fits into a hole 22 defined in a gearbox casing 24, and a flange 26 for locating the body member 12 axially relative to the gearbox casing 24. At one end 28 the body member 12 has an end wall 30 and an opening 32 in its side.
Towards the other end 34 of the body member 12 is a radially outwardly projecting ridge 36. The ridge 36 is non-continuous having gaps 37.
The cap 14 comprises concentric inner and outer tubular portions 38 and 40 extending from a circular end wall 42.
The outer tubular portion 40 is longer than the Inner tubular portion 38 and has a radially ir wardly projecting ridge 44 near its free end 46. When the cap 14 is fitted onto the body member 12 the body member extends between the two tubular portions 38, 40 of the cap 14 and the two ridges 36, 44 co-operate to retain the cap 14 in position.
The baffle 16 comprises an elongate member 50 of stainless spring steel which is coiled into a helical spring 51 of the required shape.
The spring 51 is singly wound with a gap 52 between its turns 4 to allow air to pass therethrough, and is tapered towards each ena. At its widest point the spring 51 has diameter which, when the spring is relaxed, is slightly greater than the diameter of the passage 18 such that it is held in position in the body member 12 by friction.
One end 56 of the baffle 16 extends slightly inside the
Inner tubular portion 38 of the cap 14.
In use when air passes out of the gearbox through the breather 10 it enters through the opening 32 and passes along the passage 18 through the baffle 16 between the inner and outer tubular portions 38, 40 of the cap 14 and out through the gaps 37 in the ridge 36. Oil particles entrained in the air impinge upon the baffle 16 and fall back down onto the end wall 30 and then drain back into the gearbox.
The relatively open structure of the baffle 16 tends to prevent it from becoming clogged.
