Abstract

A fence has a post 8, interconnected with transverse members e.g. 9, which are locked into an undercut channel on post 8, e.g. by means of a pin 14, and bushes 13. Packing members 32, which can be cut to any length, enable any transverse members to be positioned where required. The transverse members may have convex faces, or be substantially I-shaped and, together with the posts, may be of plastics material. The transverse members can have their ends cut to any angle to suit any slope. Adjacent transverse members are locked together by clips 12, which allow the wind to pass between transverse members, while allowing complete privacy when transverse members are fitted onto one another. <IMAGE>

Description

PLASTIFENCE This invention relates to components for a fence and is particularly, though not exclusively, concerned with components for a fence for use in a garden.
Conventional garden fences are made from wood in a number of styles. For example a close-lapped style fence comprises horizontally, or vertically, overlapping timber panels fixed to upright fence posts. A ranch style fence comprises horizontally-spaced members connection upright fence posts. Other types of fencing include wire and post and picket styles. Wooden fences are disadvantageous because will they eventually rot even if treated with preservatives, unless made of expensive timbers such as oak or cedar, and because a whole panel of close-lapping fencing must be replaced if only a portion of it becomes damaged. Furthermore preservatives must be applied to all surfaced of wooden fencing which can be difficult to achieve due to restricted access to the fence.
Preferably the post defines the recess and the transverse member the projection.
The element may be carried by the member. The element may be integral with or more preferably, separate to the member. The element may comprise a pin, rod, cylinder or peg. The element may be made of metal or a plastic material.
One or both of the post and rail may be hollow. The channel may be defined by the post. At least one of the post and transverse member is made of plastics.
Preferably the plastics material chosen is an exterior grade building plastics which is weatherproof, rotproof, tough and resilient. Suitable plastics materials include polyethylene. The plastics material may be self-coloured.
Suitable colours incude off-white, green, brown and wood grain. Both the upright post and transverse member may be formed from a plastics material. Preferably the entire fence is constructed from plastics material. In this way the aforementioned disadvantages of wooden fencing are overcome. The upright post may be a structure such as a brick pier.
The transverse member may be hollow. The transverse member may be substantially A-shaped in cross-section.
Alternatively, the transverse member may be substantially I-shaped in cross-section. However, other sections may be used. A lower edge of a transverse member may be arranged to engage an upper edge of another transverse member whereby relative lateral movement of the. members is restricted. Thus in a fence produced in accordance with the invention formed in the close-lapped style relative lateral movement of the transverse members caused, for example by wind, is inhibited.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a fence comprising at least one upright post, and an elongate transverse member connected to the upright post in which at least one of the post and member are formed from a plastics material. Preferably the plastics material chosen is an exterior grade building plastics which is weatherproof, rotproof, tough and resilient. Suitable plastics materials include polyethylene. The plastics material may be self-coloured.
Suitable colours include off-white, green, brown and wood grain.
A lower edge of a transverse member may be arranged to engage an upper edge of another transverse member whereby relative lateral movement of the members is restricted. Thus in a fence produced in accordance with the invention formed in the close-lapped style relative lateral movement of the transverse members caused, for example by wind, is inhibited. The connection means may resiliently engage projections or recesses formed on an inner surface of the transverse member. A plurality of projection orrecesses may be provided spaced along the length of the transverse member. Thus transverse members may be provided in standard lengths which can be cut to size near to a suitable projection or recess as required and connected to an upright post by the connection means of pins and bushes.
Fences in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, Figs 1 to 8, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective exploded view of components of a lapped fence in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective exploded view of components of a ranch type fence in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a perspective exploded view of components of a picket type fence in accordance with a further embodiment of the invention.
Fig 4 is a perspective exploded view of components of a trellis panel in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a perspective exploded view of the ground engaging portion of a post for use in a fence in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 6 is a perspective exploded view of another type of ground engaging portion of a post for use in a fence in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 7 is a perspective exploded view of components of another type of close-lapped type of fence in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.
The close-lapped style fence shown inf Fig. 1 comprises upright posts 8 interconnected by transverse members 9 each post has a capping piece 20, Fig. 4.
Each transverse member overlaps the transverse member immediately below.
The ranch type fence shown in Fig. 2, 16 is constructed similarly to the fence shown in Fig. 1, comprising posts 8, capping piece 20 Fig. 4 and transverse members 16, Fig. 2. The transverse members are spaced apart.
The picket style fence Fig. 3 comprises posts 8 each carrying capping pieces 20, Fig. 4, interconnected by transverse members 17, Fig. 3. Picket rails 18 are affixed upright to the transverse members 17 and bear Smaller caping pieces, of any shape at each end.
A post for use in the close-lapped fence in accordance with the invention is shown in greater detail in Fig. 1. The post 8 comprises two plain faced surfaces which form the visible surfaces of post in use. The other two surfaces have a channel like section running the whole length of the post. The transverse members, any shape, 9, Fig. 1 are drilled at either end to receive a plastic or steel pin 14, Fig. 1. On the pin a plastic spacer 13, Fig. 1 is slid on each side of the transverse member. When this has been carried out the transverse member is slid down in channel like sections, so as to lock members in place, avoiding nuts and bolts.
Before other transverse members are slid into place they must have the clip 12, Fig. 1, fixed into guide at the bottom of transverse member 9, Fig. 1. Then when slid down between posts clips into guides of lower member.
This operation to be repeated each time a transverse member is fitted, so as to lock all transverse members together , reducing whipping, thus making the fence stronger and allowing the wind to pass between transverse members.
Before last transverse member 9, Fig. 1, is fitted it must have slid on top bead rail 10, Fig. 1. Then the capping piece 20, Fig. 4 can be clipped on to post 8, Fig. 1. The transverse member 9, Fig. 1 can be cut down in length then with a simple drilling operation can be fitted as prescribed, so that the fence can fit any running length or slope required.
Further transverse members 16, Fig. 2 can be similarly connected to the post 8, Fig. 1, and fixed in a spaced apart relationship to produce a ranch style fence, by sliding down the packer 32, Fig. 1 and then sliding down transverse members 16, Fig. 2 after spacer 13, Fig. 1 and pins 14, Fig. 1 have been fitted to produce any pattern of fence as shown in Fig. 8.
Further transverse member 17, Fig. 3 cna be fixed between posts and spaced vertically depending on lengths of spacers 32, Fig. 1, so as to clip on vertical rails 18, Fig. 3 to create a picket type fence, Fig. 8, with any shape of top.
The trellis transverse members are fitted between posts 8, Fig. 4 as already described then vertical rails 22, Fig. 4 with clipped in end caps 24, Fig. 4 are positioned along length of transverse member and are then clipped on with plastic clips 23, Fig. 4 to form a trellis panel.
The plastic socket 25, Fig. 5 along with the cork screw section 26, Fig. 5 are bolted together enabling the socket to be screwed into ground, then post 8, Fig.
5 is slid onto socket to give a clip on action to create a firm fixing.
As an alternative to the screw in socket Fig. 5 there isshowna drive in socket 27, Fig. 6 together with a ground fixing socket 29, Fig. 6 post fixing on to socket as previously described.
