Description

STORAGE HEATER WITH TOWEL RAIL The present invention relates to a storage heater and more particularly to a storage heater and combined towel rail.
A problem which arises in bathrooms, kitchens and cloakrooms particularly in the summer period is that when a storage heater is fitted as a source of heat is often not switched on and thus there is no heat source with which to heat towels to maintain them in a warm and pleasing condition.
Thus it has previously been necessary to supply a separate heated towel rail with a consequent increase in installation costs and space required.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a storage heater which is splashproof and which has a towel rail combined therein.
Preferably the towel rail is provided with a remote switch which is separate to the storage heater switch and may be located outside the room in which the storage heater is located.
The towel rail is preferably mounted onto the front panel of the storage heater and is formed from an elongate tubular member which surrounds the heating element for the towel rail and in which the elongate tubular member passes through the front panel of the storage heater and in which the electrical connections to the towel rail heating element are located within the storage heater.
The towel rail is preferably fixed to the storage heater by fixing means accessible only from within the storage heater the towel rail therefore being non detachable without dismantling the storage heater.
Preferably the mounting means comprises adjustable clamp means to provide secure clamping of the towel rail to the storage heater. Preferably the clamp means includes adjustable strap means which is provided with adjustment screw means to tighten the elongate tube onto co-operating shoulder means to secure the towel rail to the storage heater. Preferably the adjustable strap means comprises a plastic strap.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in front elevation a storage heater and towel rail according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows diagrammatically in side elevational cross section the front panel of the storage heater in an exploded view, and Figure 3 shows in cross section the clamp means for the towel rail tubular structure.
With reference to the drawings a storage heater 10 is provided with a heated towel rail 20 on the front face 30.
The storage heater comprises in known manner a rectangular box structure and being suitable for bathrooms the outlet grille 40 is splashproof to prevent egress of water into the heater.
The heater includes storage heat bricks 12 which are heated by a heating element 14 which is controlled in known manner and is switched remotely to insure safety within a bathroom/kitchen type of environment.
The towel rail 20 comprises an elongate tubular member 22 which is bent as shown to form a double towel rail with no obstructions on either top or bottom rail. The one end 24 is suitably sealed by a plug 26 and the other end 28 is positioned within the front panel 30 of heater 10 and is preferably sealed therein by means of a grommet plug 32 of rubber or plastics material.
The towel rail is supplied with power via leads 50,52 which are connected to terminal block 54. An earth lead 56 is also provided which is connected to the front panel 30 via for example a fixing screw for one of the clamp members (support brackets) for the towel rail.
The towel rail 20 is fixed to the front panel 30 by two clamp members 60,62 which are substantially identical.
Each comprises (Figure 3) a support bracket 70 with an elongate projection 72 having a convex end portion 74 onto which rail 20 is clamped by means of an internal clamping strap 76 which passes round the tubular member 22 and is tightened by means of screw clamp means 78,80,82 from within panel 30 through a suitable hole 34. Brackets 70 are attached to front panel 30 by screws 84,86 one of which may be used to act as an earth terminal for earth wire 56.
Bracket 70,72 and clamping strap 76 are preferably of plastics material providing electrical and thermal isolation.
Thus rail 20 is assembled onto front panel 30 and then panel 30 is attached to the storage heater. Rail 20 cannot be removed without dismantling heater 10 and no access can be had to the electrical connections.
Terminal block 54 has mains connection lead 55 connected thereto and a remote switch 57 is provided to ensure safety within the bathroom/kitchen.
Thus towel rail 20 can be used without heater 10 being switched on. It is both electrically and thermally isolated from heater 10 so that it is independent and no substantial heat loss occurs.
