Hollow-ware.-In a machine for making canbodies the feeding means is arranged to deliver a number of blanks simultaneously to each operating station. In the duplex machine shown the blanks are fed singly from two stacks O, O<1>. The lowest blank in each stack is flexed by a pneumatic sucker 35, reciprocated vertically by a cam, and fed by a pawl 36 carried by a bar 37, which is reciprocated horizontally by a crank 59, Fig. 1<a>. The blanks, which are guided' by side walls 24, Fig. 1, and prevented from moving backwards by springs 40, are fed by pawls 42, 63, 64 to dies 50, 51, 52, 53, which are operated by an eccentric 58, Fig. 1<a>, to notch two blanks simultaneously as shown in Fig. 8. The blanks are positioned below these dies by stop-pawls 89, Fig. 12, and press-back pawls 132 which are moved back by their springs, when the feed bar 37 returns, to press the blanks against the stops 89. The blanks are similarly fed and positioned below dies at M and M<1>, Fig. 1<a>, which bend the two edges of two blanks ready for seaming and then below a loosely held wedge 104 which is pressed down, against the action of springs 106, by a wedge 103 to clamp two blanks on a mandrel 70. Supports 112, Fig. 5, are then withdrawn, the blanks are bent by arms 119, 120, and the seams closed by a hammer 109 and anvil 118. The bodies are then fed by pawls 74 and 82, Fig. 1<a>, the latter carried by a lever 77, to a chain carrier 78 which moves them past a fluxing-roller 80 and soldering-iron 81. The machine may be modified to deal with more than two blanks at a time, particularly if they are short.
