Abstract
183,258. Brock, J. April 21, 1921. Horseshoes.-Horseshoe blanks are punched by two sets of punches in line, their position being adjusted to accommodate variations in the blank. For this purpose the sets of punches 77, which work through guide plates 74 carried by the dies 67, are screwed into blocks 80 mounted in a transverse slot 84 in the press-head 42 and are locked by bars 82 engaging flats on the punches. Each set of punches is thus capable of endlong movement with its corresponding die, this movement being effected by positioning bars 86, which are adjustable by means of nuts 91, and carry fingers 87 adapted to engage the inner shoulders of the nail creases. The bars 86 are attached to arms 98 pivoted to a yoke 102 which is raised by a cam 106 on the main shaft 10, so as to raise the bars 86 and permit the passage of a blank. The bars are moved inwardly by a cam 111 which moves a yoke 107 carrying pins 109 which press on the outer edges of the arms 98. In operation the creased bar stock A supported on rollers 13 is fed bv a head 18 which is reciprocated on guides 17 by a link 20 and carries a gripper 28 which feeds the bar forward until released by a pin 32 riding on the rollers 13. The feed is finished by a pawl 35 pivoted to the front of the head 18 and adapted to engage notches 34 in the bar. The press-head 42 is driven by a connecting-rod 47 and eccentric 49 on the main shaft 10, which is driven by a pinon 8 on the countershaft 6, which also carries a flywheel 5<a>. The descent of the press-head first shears off a blank by means of the blade 40, delivers it on to a block 53, and flattens it under a plate 61. On the succeeding up-stroke the blank being released drops on to guide rods 64, as the block is moved away by a cam 59, and as the block returns it pushes the blank forward on to the dies 67 and holds it against a plate 66 which is raised to receive it, after being lowered to discharge the preceding blank, by a cam 118. In a modified construction shown in Fig. 19, the inner punches 142 are pressed down by a flat spring 145 and act as positioning fingers by engaging nail marks on the blank. In a further modification the dies and punches do not move endwise, but the blank is adjusted either by the action of the bars 86, or by means of a single positioning bar operated by the head 18.
