225,807. Rubber Latex Research Corporation, (Assignees of Wescott, W. B.). Dec. 5, 1923, [Convention date]. Compound or composite blocks; paving blocks.-Paving blocks consist of rubber and comminuted tyre stock or of an assemblage of rubber and cotton fibres between half an inch and one and a half inches in length, part of the rubber in each case being latex rubber, and a horizontally placed reinforcement 3 is provided near the lower face. The reinforcement may be of wire mesh or, for parquetry purposes, of woven jute or cotton fabric, and orifices 7 may extend from the upper face to the reinforcement. The blocks are attached to a wooden foundation by means of drive-screws 9 passing through the holes 7. Washers 4 are moulded on top of the reinforcement. The spaces above the screws are closed by rubber plugs 10. Where the foundation is of concrete, wooden sleepers may be inset in the foundation to receive the screws or the blocks may be screwed direct to the concrete. For obtaining the long cotton fibres desired, comminuted tyre stock, scrap from belting &c. is employed, such material being screened and impregnated with rubber latex. The tyre stock used has generally equal quantities of rubber and cotton and the amount of latex rubber is not less than 10 per cent nor more than 15 per cent of the whole cotton-rubber mass. The part below the reinforcement may be of hard rubber or it may have incorporated hard rubber in the form of buffings. Specification 236,624, [Class 70, India-rubber &c.], is referred to.
