Abstract

To prevent discharges of crude oil in the case of a crack in the bottom (6) of a tanker resulting from a grounding or the like, a liquid layer is arranged in the bottom of the cargo tanks (2) of the ship. The height (14) of the layer is chosen so as to ensure that a hydrostatic balance between the cargo (5) in the tank and the sea water on the outside is established before all of the liquid layer has escaped through the crack. A certain mixture of chemicals is added to the layer (7) to prevent emulsion between oil and water, bacteria build up and corrosion of the tank. <IMAGE>
