225,638. Trevithick, F. H. Sept. 14, 1923. Baffles.-A combined gas-distributor and sparkarrester for locomotive &c. boilers consists of a chamber c carried by the smoke-box door a so as to be swung between the blast pipe d and chimney prolongation e to make, for all practical purposes, joints therewith, the chamber c being provided with numerous small holes h, the combined area of which is as great as and is preferably greater than the cross-sectional area of the chimney, but which are masked either by forming the curved and outwardly inclined rear wall f of the chamber imperforate or by a guard plate, which is either carried by the chamber c or secured to the smoke-box. In the modified construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the chamber c is composed of the rear wall f, front perforated plate i and upper and lower plates, which carry the plates f, i and are themselves carried upon and stayed to the smoke-box door by angle plates k, l. In either modification a light angle ring m, Fig. 5, may be pivoted on the chamber c between the chamber and the chimney prolongation e so as to be able to be swung out of register with the chimney prolongation e to accelerate the process of lighting up and raising steam.
