Abstract

225,321. Bonham, H. Sept. 27, 1923. Inking - apparatus. - The inking-rollers of cylinder printing-machines for printing from intaglio plates are positively driven when the ink is being applied to the plate, and on the return stroke the doctor blade is raised and a feedroller or inking-roller is operated to arrest the ink supply. This invention is particularly applicable to machines of the two revolution type wherein the cylinder is reciprocated over the bed and rotated in one direction by fixed racks on the bed, as set forth in Specification 160,685. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, ink is transferred from a metal roller g rotating in a trough h by a composition roller n<1> to another metal roller g<1>, and thence by a composition roller l to the intaglio plate s. The roller g<1> is driven from one of the racks on the bed through a pinion k, and drives the trough roller g by means of a chain j. The roller g is geared to the roller n<1> and the roller g<1> to the plate-inking roller l. The roller n<1> is carried in arms n pivoted to the shaft of the roller g and connected by links p to arms p<1> on a shaft f, which carries the doctor wand an arm q having a roller q<1> engaging a cam r driven by two to one reducing gear r<1> from the shaft of the cylinder b. At the time the carriage b<1> moves to the right, which is the non-printing stroke, the roller q<1> engages the low part of the cam r so that the doctor w is lifted from the plate s and the, roller n<1> away from the roller g<1>, thus interrupting the ink supply, whilst during the printing stroke of the carriage to the left, the doctor wand roller n<1> are lowered. In' the modification shown in Fig. 3, the trough roller t is driven by a chain and sprocket wheels t<1>, t<2> from a spur wheel t<3> gearing with a spur wheel t<4> in mesh with a rack on the bed. The plate inking-roller u is driven by the roller t and is carried by pivoted arms v connected by links z to the arms carrying the doctor blade, which is actuated as before by a cam r and arm q so that the doctor blade and inking-roller are lifted during the non-printing stroke of the carriage to the right.
