Abstract

An anchor for setting in concrete, comprises a circular shaft 1 with a bar 5 extending transversely through the shaft 1 and a threaded bore 3 in or on the upper end 2 of the shaft 1 to secure other items thereto, in which the shaft 1 has peripheral grooves 7 in which the concrete sets. The anchor may be made of plated steel. Dimensions of the grooves are specified. <IMAGE>

Description

ANCHOR MEANS This invention relates to anchor means and particularly to an anchor which is adapted for setting in a settable material such as concrete or like material. The invention is particularly, but not exclusively, intended for use in the construction industry.
In civil engineering constructions such as bridges, or the framework of buildings, it is frequently necessary to secure another item or member to a concrete base. Examples are the metal framework of a building which must be secured to a concrete base or footings, or guide rails for a bridge or roadway which have to be secured to the road itself.
Known methods of securing such structures to concrete bases include, for example, expansion bolts which are inserted in a hole drilled in the concrete so that when the bolts are tightened an expansion device on the bolt expands laterally outwardly to grip the concrete to thereby secure the bolt in the hole. Another form of known anchor is a steel bar which has a smooth outside surface and is typically set in the concrete as the concrete is poured. The anchor will have either an internal or external thread through which the remaining parts of the structure are secured to the anchor.
It is known for such anchors to have a reinforcing rod extending laterally outwardly from the steel bar to provide additional anchorage in the concrete. Known forms of such anchors have a maximum load capacity of 22 1/2 tons.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved form of anchor with a much greater performance.
According to the present invention there is provided anchor means for setting in a settable material such as concrete or like material, the anchor means comprising a main shaft, preferably of circular cross-section, fastening means on said shaft to enable an item to be secured thereto, a reinforcing member extending from the periphery of the shaft, and one or more peripheral grooves in said shaft, which grooves are adapted to accomodate said settable material.
Preferably, the main shaft has a plurality of said peripheral grooves, preferably three, located at spaced intervals in the lower most part of the shaft, when set in concrete. Preferably, the reinforcing member comprises a steel bar extending radially through the main shaft adjacent the lower end thereof. Peripheral grooves may be located on the main shaft on each side ofsthe reinforcing member. At its upper end, the main shaft may have an internal threaded bore.
Alternatively, a thread may be provided on the exterior of the main shaft, both of these threaded elements being provided to enable a further item to be secured to the anchor by means of a bolt in the case of the internal threaded bore, or a nut secured to the external screw thread on the main shaft.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying informal drawings which illustrates, in figure 1, a side view of an anchor means, and figure 2 shows a section along the line AA of figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing there is shown an anchor for setting in concrete in civil engineering structures. One particular application for the anchor is in the provision of fastening means to enable a concrete side wall or retaining barrier to be secured to the edge of a roadway of a bridge or like structure where some form of lateral safety barrier is required. As shown in figure 1, the anchor has a main shaft 1 of circular cross-section formed of a high grade steel. The anchor is adapted to be set in concrete with the main shaft substantially vertically disposed, although this may be varied to suit the particular circumstances of its use to ensure that the load applied to the anchor is dissipated through the concrete in the best manner. In this embodiment, the main shaft has at its upper end 2, an internal bore 3 which carries a screw thread 4 adapted to receive a fastening bolt.
Adjacent its lower end 4, the main shaft 1 carries a radially extending reinforcing member 5 in the form of a steel rod which is also shown in figure 2 in plan view. The member 5 is a close fit in a transverse bore 6 in the main shaft 1.
The main shaft includes three peripheral grooves 7 which are spaced along the main shaft towards the lower end thereof.
One of the grooves is placed below the reinforcing member 5, one immediately above, and the third one spaced from this second one. The effect of the grooves is that the concrete flows into the grooves and consequently, the concrete shrinkage, which occurs on setting, further ensures that the grooves are fully filled with concrete, the dimensions of the grooves being such to ensure this.
In a typical installation, in which the anchors are used to secure a traffic barrier to a roadway, the anchor means are set to the roadway. Depending upon the installation and the loads to be borne by the anchor, a different number of grooves may be provided.
In this installation, the main shaft is 250mm long and 38mm in diameter, the grooves being 3mm in depth and 6mm in width and spaced approximately 30mm apart. The radially extending reinforcing member 5 is 16mm in diameter and lOOmm long. Prior to being set in concrete, the anchor is plated to prevent rust.
The desribed embodiment has an internal threaded bore, in which case, the anchor is typically fastened in concrete so as to be flush with the roadway surface. The barrier to be fastened thereto is secured by means of bolts. In an alternative arrangement, the shaft carries an external thread which projects above the concrete, the item to be secured thereto being placed over the thread and secured by means of a nut.
It will be understood that many variations to the anchor can be made within the ambit of the invention. For example, the size of the anchor and its constituent parts, the main shaft and the reinforcing rod, the size and number of grooves and their disposition along the shaft, and also the spacing of the anchors and the anticipated loadings.
