Abstract
224,860. Johns-Manville, Inc., (Assignees of Baldwin, L. A.). Nov. 16,1923, [Convention date]. Roofs. - Receptacles for volatile liquids and/ or gases having a wall and roof are provided with h an impervious, heat-insulating covering, which has a flexible section surrounding the junction of the wall and roof, adapted to permit relative motion of the wall and roof, and making a vapour-tight joint with the wall. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the covering comprises a layer or layers 12, 13, preferably of a felted fabric enclosed between paper covers, one of which is impregnated with asphalt and the other with sodium silicate or other gas-resisting impregnant, the flexible section being protected by an impervious canvas or asbestos asphalt sheet 9, which may be further protected by asphaltic cement 29. The covering is attached to the wall by adhesive, such as melted asphalt, and secured by binding 19, the edges being protected by a sealing strip 20. Roofing sheets 32 laid in hot asphalt and nailed in position are covered by a layer 37 preferably impregnated on its lower surface with asphalt and with its exposed surface white to reflect radiant heat. In the form shown in Fig. 2, for use with a metal roof, stiff sheets 49 of asphalt felt, impregnated asbestos felt, &c. are attached to the roof by a layer 48 of asphalt, and the layers 51, 52 are laid in hot asphalt. Overlapped roofing sheets 66, and covering sheets 67, 68, white on their exposed surfaces, are similarly laid. The covering is attached to the wall by asphaltic cement, and binders 50, 60 are employed.
