Description

1 1 1 A REBATE PROFILE FOR A DOOR OR WINDOW FRAME This invention relates
to a door or a window having a displaceable frame and fixed outer frame with respective rebate profiles which mutually partially overlap leaving a gap therebetween which in cross-section changes its direction several times with respect to the plane of the door or window.
Rebate profiles of this type are known in frames which are designed to be resistant to blast from explosions, for example as described in German Patent Specification No. DE 36 02 218 Cl. In the aforesaid disclosure a rebate profile of a fixed outer frame and a rebate profile of a swivellable casement frame mounted therein overlap and, in the overlap region, define a gap. The rebate profiles are interengaged with one another in the gap region in that in each case a ledge formed integrally on the one rebate profile lies opposite and engages into a groove formed in the other rebate profile. As a result of this arrangement, these known rebate profiles can be flush with one another on the attack-endangered exterior of doors and windows while at the same time, by means of the integrally formed ledge and groove, interengage one another to provide an overall construction which is resistant to break-in.
However, with all known rebate profiles combinations which define a gap therebetween, a region of the gap remains accessible by way of the unavoidable gap entry cross-section, so that a break-in tool, for example a chisel or a crowbar, can be driven into this region. If such a housebreaking tool is disposed with its tip in the entry region of the gap, then, by forcible swivelling of the tool in a place perpendicular to the longitudinal extent of the rebate profiles, these can be moved away from one another. In this way the gap width SJL060891 2 increases and makes it possible to penetrate with the tip of the break-in tool deeper into the gap and then to repeat the swivelling of the tool to bring about further widening of the gap until finally, as a result of these intrusions, which may need to be carried out at several points along the length of the rebate profiles, the door or the window is broken open. This procedure is often facilitated by the short distance between the point of attack of the tip of the break-in tool on one rebate profile and the point of support of the break-in tool on the other rebate profile, which results in a comparatively short load lever relative to the long force lever available in the case of most break-in tools. In particular, if a crowbar is used, the length of which usually greatly qxceeds that of a chisel, the expenditure of force necessary for breaking-open a window or door between such frames is relatively low since the length of the load lever is unvariedly short as opposed to the comparatively long force lever which is available.
An object of the invention is to design a rebate profile in such a way that frames for doors or windows, whether displaceable frames of casements or sashes, or fixed outer frames for surrounding these, when equipped therewith, are distinguished by high resistance to attempts at break-in.
According to the invention a trap channel is formed in the rebate profile of one of the frames substantially in alignment with the entry to the gap.
As a result of the aforesaid trap channel and its arrangement, the gap between the adjoining rebate profiles is obstructed at a short distance from its entry cross-section in that the tip of a break-in tool introduced into the gap perforce gets caught in the trap channel as soon as it is advanced into the gap. When 1 k SJL060891 3 the tip of the break-in tool is located in the trap channel, swivelling of the tool merely leads to the lever forces acting on the inner surfaces of the trap channel. If those regions of the rebate profile which define or lie adjacent the trap channel are of appropriate shape and size and if the rebate profile is, moreover, made from a material which is resistant to bending stresses, then the gap cannot be widened once the tip of the break-in tool has got caught inside the trap channel.
However, even if the break-in tool is introduced into the gap only to such a small extent that its tip is not inserted into the trap channel, an attempt at break-in is still likely to fail, particularly in embodiments where the ratio of the width of the gap in its entrance region to the spacing between the gap entrance and the entrance of the trap channel is a small as possible and is preferably about 1:1. With this sort of ratio a break-in tool, after a swivelling of at least 450, only comes into abutment with its tip against a side surface of the gap whilst also contacting the edge of the opposite side of the gap. In so far as any space for further swivelling of the break-in tool beyond 450 is available, such further swivelling merely leads to the break-in tool sliding out of the gap without having expanded it.
If the rebate profile with the trap channel is a constituent part of the fixed frame, the angle through which a break-in tool can be swivelled in the direction of the fixed frame as an outer frame is usually limited by adjoining brickwork, whereas by swivelling of the break-in tool in the direction of the displaceable frame this is, at worst, pressed increasing into the closed position, but in no way is the opening thereof facilitated.
SJL060891 4 If the rebate profile is, for example, a constituent part of a fixed frame, then the inside of the trap channel, adjacent to the displaceable frame, is preferably in alignment with the outside of a longitudinal side part of the rebate profile associated with the displaceable frame, so that there is a stepless transition from the gap into the trap channel.
Advantageously, the gap between the respective profiles changes direction at a spacing from its entrance, possibly so as to extend perpendicularly to its course at the entrance, and the trap channel masks or covers that change of direction.
In certain practical embodiments in accordance with the invention a further trap channel is formed in the same rebate profile as the first mentioned channel so as to extend from a central region of the gap with a depth which is inclined relative to the gap course in this region.
The first trap channel of such a rebate profile having two trap channels should still be in alignment with the entry region of the gap between the overlapping rebate profiles. In effect, such a rebate profile generally has a longitudinal side part with a W-shaped cross section.
With such a rebate profile, upon an attempt at break-in the tip of a break-in tool is, again, with increasing depth of penetration guided into the first trap channel, which preferably steplessly adjoins or continues on from the entrance region of the gap. In the event that the tip of the break-in tool is forcibly deflected out of the region of the first trap channel, it is guided into the second trap channel and likewise remains there without effect.
SJL060891 Two exemplified embodiments of a door or window provided with rebate profile in accordance with the invention are illustrated in fragmentary cross-section in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows an arrangement which includes a rebate profile with a V- shaped longitudinal side part; and Fig. 2 shows an arrangement which includes a rebate profile with a W- shaped longitudinal side part.
In both exemplified embodiments a limb 1 is a constituent part of a swivellable casement frame, the remainder of which is not shown, which is surrounded by a fixed frame. Similarly, only one limb 2 is shown as a constituent part of the fixed frame. Both limbs 1 and 2 are fixed to edge regions of respectively panels or panes 3, 4, which are shown in brokenaway manner.
The limbs 1 and 2 have rebate profiles 5 and 6, or respectively 5 and 6', which partially overlap one another. In the overlap region a gap 7, or respectively 71, remains, which changes its direction several times with respect to the plane of the frames.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 a longitudinal side part 8 of the rebate profile 6 is V-shaped in crosssection and so positioned with respect to the overlapping rebate profile 5 that in the closed position of the frames a trap channel 9 lies opposite the entry cross-section of the gap 7 with its open side directed towards the gap entry and at only a short distance therefrom. A break-in tool introduced into the gap 7 will therefore get its tip trapped in the channel 9.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 a longitudinal side part 81 of the rebate profile 61 is W-shaped in crosssection and so positioned with respect to the SJL060891 6 overlapping rebate profile 5 that in the closed position of the frames a trap channel 9' lies with its open side opposite the entry cross-section of the gap 71, in which, likewise, an inserted break-in tool will be likely to get its tip caught.
In the unlikely event of a break-in tool avoiding or overcoming the trap channel 9', its tip would pass into a further trap channel 10 extending adjacent and parallel to the trap channel 9' and would likewise get trapped therein.
If a break-in tool, such as a crowbar, having its tip caught in one of the trap channels 9, 9' or 10, is swivelled, by manipulation of its free end towards the limb 6, or respectively 6', the lever force exerted acts exclusively on the rebate profile 6, or respectively 6', without the width of the gap 7, or respectively 7', thereby being enlarged. If, on the other hand, the swivel movement is effected towards the limb 5, then the tool is at worst pressed increasingly against the rebate profile 6, or respectively 61, so again the attempt at break-in does not lead to success.
Although the illustrated embodiments are of a swivellable casement frame in combination with a surrounding fixed frame, the invention is equally applicable to slidable or sash frames, and the rebate profile provided with the trap channel may be either that of the fixed frame or that of the displaceable f rame.
