Abstract
224,724. Wright, A. A., Howlett, W., and Lynch, E. C. Nov. 19, 1923. Rackets.- In an adjustable tennis racket or the like means are provided for tightening the stringing by thrusting the frame out of the handle and bv moving the wedge in the opposite direction. A nut 7 at the end of the handle is rigidly attached to a tube 5 provided with a screw thread 16 engaging a collar 8 attached to the frame 2. The frame is expanded to tighten the strings by rotating the nut relative to the handle thus forcing out the collar 8 and frame 2. At the same time a second nut 6 rotates by frictional contact with the nut 7 and, by means of a rod 4 and thread 18, draws down the wedge 3 to force the frame on to a channel-shaped seating 15 within the handle. The threads 16 and 18 are of opposite hand and the thread 18 is the coarser thereby giving a differential adjustment. At each side of the wedge is a spring-pressed flap 24 which opens inwards under air pressure during a stroke and allows air to pass through the handle for the purpose of keeping the handle cool. The frame 2 is of channel section, Fig. 9, thickened in the middle and having the sharp angles rounded off. The edges of the string holes are rounded off.
