Abstract
A pharmaceutical composition for treating oral and skin infections comprises an anti-inflammatory steroid and metronidazole. Dexamethasone sodium phosphate is the preferred steroid used in the composition. In use, the composition is applied directly onto the infected area in the form of a paste. The composition is particularly suitable for treating dry dental sockets (localised osteoitis), pericoronitis, and for use in peridontal packs.
Description
PHARMACEUTICAL COMPOSITION FOR ORAL AND SKIN INFECTIONS
The invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition which finds particular use in the treatment of oral and skin infections.
Oral infections may arise following dental surgery.
For example, after tooth extraction exposed bone may become infected resulting in dry sockets (localised osteoitis) . A patient with dry sockets would normally be given penicillin tablets to reduce infection. Oral infections may occur simply as a result of tooth decay when soft tissues surrounding an infected tooth become inflamed and painful. An object of the invention is to provide a pharmaceutical composition for treating such infections and skin infections from wounds simply and rapidly.
According to the invention, therefore, a pharmaceutical composition is provided comprising an anti-inflammatory steroid and an anti-bacterial agent, such as metronidazole. Preferably, the steroid is dexamethasone (its acetate or phosphate) and the steroid and metronidazole are present in the composition in weight proportions of 1:102 to 104, preferably 1:500 to 2000, respectively. As an example, 0.5 to 2.0 mg dexamethasone sodium phosphate and 1000 mg metronidazole is used. The ingredients are mixed together with other conventional ingredients, as required, to form a paste of a consistency suitable for direct application to the infected area.
The invention also relates to the use of the composition described above in the treatment of oral and skin infections. In particular, the use of the composition in the treatment of dry sockets, pericoronitis and periodontal packs.
Furthermore, the invention relates to a method of forming a composition for the treatment of oral and skin infections, comprising mixing an anti-inflammatory steroid and metronidazole to a consistency suitable for application onto the infected area.
In use, the composition is applied directly onto the infected area. Within a few minutes after application an improvement is felt by the patient as inflammation and pain are reduced. The combination of dexamethasone and metronidazole have been found to be particularly effective but it is possible that other corticosteroids or corticosteroid analogues with antiinflammatory activity and/or other anti-bacterial agents would also be effective. Moreover, instead of being applied to the infected area in the form of a paste, the composition could be applied in other forms such as a cream, lotion or spray, whichever is most appropriate for the area to be treated.
