Abstract
Apparatus for detecting unauthorised removal of an object, for example, a vehicle is disclosed, the apparatus comprising a transmitter 2, powered by the vehicle's battery or by other means, a trembler switch 5 for detecting movement of the vehicle and a user operable switch 4 by means of which the apparatus may be armed. In use, when an owner leaves the vehicle, the apparatus is armed by actuation of the switch so that if the vehicle is moved, prior to disarming, the transmitter will transmit a signal. A second vehicle, for example, a police vehicle, includes a receiver 8 for receiving the transmitted frequency. Thus, if a vehicle, with the apparatus armed, is stolen, movement of the vehicle will cause the transmitter to transmit. If the stolen vehicle is subsequently in the vicinity of a police vehicle, having a receiver for receiving the transmitted frequency, the police vehicle may detect the transmitted signal and the occupier of the stolen vehicle may be apprehended. <IMAGE>
Description
THEFT DETECTION
This invention relates to theft detection and provides apparatus for theft detection and a method of theft detection.
The problem of the theft of vehicles, for example, cars and lorries, is well known. Many stolen vehicles are never found. This is because it is not possible to detect whether a vehicle has been stolen without firstly having details of some indicia of a stolen vehicle, for example, its vehicle registration number or its chassis number; and, secondly, actually noting the presence of the vehicle having a particular registration or chassis number. It is well known that thieves change vehicle number plates, and this makes it all the more difficult to identify stolen vehicles.
Similarly, in the case of, for example, video recorders and televisions, it is almost impossible to know whether a particular item is stolen or not.
We aim to alleviate these problems by providing apparatus and a method which will enable stolen property to be more easily identified.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided apparatus for detecting unauthorised removal of a movable object, the apparatus comprising;
a transmitter;
means for connecting the transmitter to a power supply means;
fixing means for fixing the apparatus to said object;
switch means for switching the transmitter between transmitting and non-transmitting states;
sensor means for sensing when said object is moved and being arranged to actuate said switch means; and
a receiver for location remote from the transmitter, in use, the receiver being arranged to receive the frequency transmitted by said transmitter and including indicator means for indicating that the frequency transmitted by said transmitter is being received.
The term "movable object" may include motor vehicles, such as cars or lorries, boats, caravans, televisions and video recorders. The invention is of particular interest in relation to the detection of stolen vehicles, for example, cars and lorries, and towable objects, for example, boats and caravans.
In order to have a good chance of a receiver, mounted, for example, in a police vehicle, giving a signal which is unambiguously attributable to one source, the transmitter may suitably have a transmitting range no more than about 50 metres; preferably no more than about 25 metres; most preferably the transmitting range may be about 10 to 20 metres.
In an alternative embodiment, the transmitter may have a transmitting range of about 440 yards (402 m). In this case, preferably, the transmitter is arranged to transmit information which allows the source of the transmitted information to be unambiguously determined.
For example the transmitter may be arranged to transmit information relating to the moveable object, for example, to the make, model, colour and/or registration number of a source vehicle. The transmitter may include means for enabling it to be pre-programmed with said information which is suitably stored on a chip.
The transmitter may transmit a signal at a frequency in the sonic band. Preferably, the transmitter transmits an electromagnetic signal at a frequency in the radio frequency band. Preferably, said transmitter transmits at a single frequency. Preferably, said transmitter is arranged to transmit a periodic pulse. Preferably said signal consists of a single frequency. Preferably, said transmitter is arranged solely to transmit said signal.
Preferably, said means for connecting the transmitter to a power supply means, is arranged to connect to a power simply means which is an integral component of said movable object, that is, a component required even in the absence of the apparatus of the present invention. Where the power supply means is an integral component, it is preferable that said transmitter cannot readily be disconnected from the power supply means. If, however, the power supply means is disconnectable, it is preferable that the arrangement is such that disconnection immobilises the movable object, for example, in the case of a car, disconnection results in the ignition being immobilised.
Alternatively, a transmitter power supply means may be provided specifically for the transmitter. Preferably, said transmitter power supply means is an integral component of said apparatus, and, as such, cannot readily be disconnected from the transmitter. Preferably, said transmitter power supply means is arranged to power said transmitter for at least about 12 hours, preferably about 24 hours, more preferably about 48 hours.
Preferably, the transmitter power supply means is arranged to be trickle charged by a further power supply means, for example, said power supply means mentioned above. In this case, said transmitter power supply means may power the transmitter as long as said further power supply means is supplying power to it and, accordingly, the transmitter may be powered for an indefinite period.
The apparatus, and particularly said transmitter power supply means, may be such that with said further power supply means disconnected so that the transmitter power supply means is not trickle charged, the transmitter will be capable of starting to transmit at any time within a period of about 18 months.
Preferably, said switch means is designed to be specifically under the control of the owner or an authorised user of the object. Said switch means may be actuable by means of an actuator means which may be a key means, whether in the form of a mechanical key or a magnetic 'key', for example, a magnetically coded card.
Alternatively, said actuator means may be actuable by a code, for example, in the form of a PIN (Personal
Identification Number), which a user may input into said switch means.
Said sensor means may be a trembler switch.
Preferably, once said switch means is actuated, the tranmitter means transmits until said switch means is actuated to switch the transmitter to a non-transmitting state.
Preferably, said transmitter is arranged to be located in a hidden and/or inaccessible location which is part of said movable object. For example, in the case of a car or lorry, the chassis of the vehicle may provide the location.
Preferably, said indicator means is a visual indicator, for example, a coloured light. Preferably, the receiver is arranged to receive only a single frequency or relatively narrow frequency band. Preferably, said receiver includes fixing means for fixing it to a second object. The second object may be a fixed object, for example, at the exit of a car park. Preferably, the second object is a movable object; it may typically be a police vehicle.
The apparatus may optionally further include a personal receiver which the owner or authorised user of the movable object may retain, which personal receiver is arranged to be automatically actuated when the moveable object is stolen to alert the owner or authorised user to this fact.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a transmitter kit for a movable object comprising:
a transmitter;
means for connecting the transmitter to a power supply means;
switch means for switching the transmitter between transmitting and non-transmitting states;
sensor means for sensing when said object is moved and being arranged to actuate said switch means; and
fixing means for fixing parts of said kit to said object.
The transmitter kit may include any components described herein where applicable.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of protecting a movable object against unauthorised removal, the method including fixing a transmitter kit according to the second aspect to the movable object and fixing a receiver arranged to receive the frequency transmitted by said transmitter in a position remote from said movable object.
The method may further include fixing the receiver to a second movable object.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a system comprising a plurality of said transmitter kits and a plurality of said receivers.
The invention extends to a movable object incorporating apparatus according to the second aspect.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which is a schematic representation of an embodiment of the invention, in use.
Apparatus 1 is provided which comprises a transmitter 2 which is fitted to a vehicle, such as a car or caravan in a suitable location. It is preferable to fit the transmitter in a place where it is difficult to find. It may suitably be fitted to a vehicle chassis by means of bolts. The transmitter then may be encased within fibreglass which would make it more difficult to remove.
Alternatively, car manufacturers could incorporate suitably dimensioned compartments as parts of vehicles, for receiving the transmitter.
The transmitter is constructed to emit at a single radio frequency. The actual frequency emitted at should be one which will not easily be interfered with and, particularly, should be one which is not generated by existing electrical components in the vehicle. The transmitter may transmit a signal which is a continuous signal or periodic pulse.
When used with vehicles, it may be satisfactory for the transmitter to have a range of about 15 metres.
The transmitter is, in the case of a car, powered by the car's battery 3. In the case of a caravan, a separate battery is provided, having a life as long as possible, at least permitting the transmitter to transmit for 12 hours.
An indicator is provided to indicate when battery power is low.
In a car, the transmitter is wired into the ignition system, preferably in such a way that it cannot easily be disconnected. Alternatively, the transmitter is wired into the ignition system so that if it is disconnected, the ignition system is immobilised and the car will not start.
The apparatus includes a user-operable switch 4 to actuate the apparatus, which switch is key operable.
Alternatively, the apparatus may be operable in response to the input by a user, via a keypad, of a
Personal Identification Number (PIN). Suitably, the keypad should be hidden from view.
A trembler switch 5, or other means, is provided to sense when the vehicle is moved. The trembler switch is connected to the transmitter and initiates the transmission of the signal when the vehicle is moved.
The apparatus also includes a receiver 6 which is arranged to receive the signal at the frequency emitted by the transmitter and to cause a light 7 to be illuminated to show receipt thereof. The receiver suitably is fitted in a police vehicle.
Any number of vehicles may be fitted with a transmitter in the form previously mentioned. Fewer detection vehicles would be fitted with a receiver in the form previously mentioned.
The apparatus may be used as follows to detect the theft of a vehicle.
When an owner of a particular vehicle fitted with a transmitter leaves the vehicle, he actuates the useroperable switch using the key or keypad. This arms the trembler switch. If then, without the user-operable switch being deactuated to thereby disarm the trembler switch, the vehicle is moved, that is, if the vehicle is stolen, the trembler switch will cause the transmitter to transmit the signal at the frequency.
If an attempt is made by a thief to disarm the trembler switch, by means other than the user-operable switch, then either this will simply not be possible or the vehicle's ignition system will be immobilised.
If the stolen vehicle, transmitting the signal at the frequency comes within range of the stolen car detection vehicle's receiver, a light will be illuminated in the detection vehicle to indicate that a vehicle in the vicinity of the car detection vehicle is a stolen vehicle.
Action may then be taken to stop the stolen vehicle and repossess it. The transmitter will transmit the signal until either the battery is exhausted or the user-operable switch is deactuated by an authorised user.
If the vehicle is not stolen, then on the owner's return, he simply disarms the trembler switch by deactuating the user-operable switch. Th transmitter will, in this case, not transmit the signal at the frequency, at any time.
The apparatus may be modified to include means which stop, as far as possible, the frequency being jammed.
Additionally, a light display, hidden or otherwise, may be included at a convenient location on the vehicle which includes the transmitter to indicate when the trembler is armed.
In an alternative embodiment, a transmitter power supply means is provided as an integral component of the apparatus. In this case, the apparatus, including the transmitter power supply means and the transmitter may be provided in a generally sealed unit and, as such, the transmitter cannot readily be disconnected from the transmitter power supply means. In order to increase the life of the transmitter power supply means, it may be connected to, for example, a car's battery so that the car's battery may trickle charge it. Nevertheless, even if the connection between the transmitter power supply means and the car's battery is broken, the transmitter may still transmit, for example, for 48 hours, powered solely by the transmitter power supply means.
The apparatus may be modified so as to be incorporatable in for example, a video or television and, in fact, in any object which might be stolen.
In another embodiment, the transmitter may include a chip which is pre-programmed with information, for example, the make, model, colour and/or registration number, of a vehicle, the transmitter being arranged to transmit such information when the vehicle is stolen. A receiver in a stolen car detection vehicle is arranged to receive the transmitted information and display the information so that action may be taken to stop the stolen vehicle.
The receiver may, furthermore, have direction finding capability, provided, for example, by the provision of four aerials of, for example, 12 inches (about 30 cm) in length, one being disposed at each corner of an 18 inch (about 46 cm) square on the roof of the stolen car detection vehicle. A display unit in the stolen car detection vehicle is suitably arranged to indicate the strength of signals received by each aerial and thereby the general direction and distance of the stolen vehicle from the stolen car detection vehicle may be assessed.
Additionally, the receiver in the stolen car detection vehicle is arranged to provide a print-out of information relating to a detected stolen vehicle so as to reduce the likelihood of confusion if more than one stolen vehicle is in the vicinity of the detection vehicle. Means may, in addition, be provided to allow one signal to be "locked onto" and that stolen vehicle pursued in preference to others.
