Abstract

224,661. Lefroy, H. P. T. Sept. 28, 1923. Aerials; atmospherics and undesired signals, limiting.-An aerial is placed in the centre part of a tunnel containing air or gas dielectric or in an evacuated chamber below the earth's surface, with a space of a foot or more around it free from solid or liquid dielectric in order to reduce the capacity. The current losses in such an aerial are stated to be less than in a normal buried aerial, and it also shows greater selectivity and freedom from atmospherics and directional characteristics. The aerial may comprise a bare copper conductor supported by insulators on frames of X form in a trench afterwards roofed over, or in a watertight pipe. The receiving apparatus may be inserted between two lengths of conductor, and the aerial mav be brought up to the ground level bv screened leads to make connection therewith, and may also be brought up at intervals to junction boxes to enable its length to be varied.
