Description

Improved Cushion The present invention relates to a cushion for use outdoors, for example on the beach or in the garden.
When resting outdoors, a person wishing to read a book or newspaper will find it difficult to do so in bright sunshine. Because it is necessary to shade one's eyes from the sun, reading becomes an uncomfortable two handed operation.
With a view to mitigating this problem, the present invention provides a combined cushion and sunshade which comprises a cushion having a portion for supporting a user's head, a support extending generally upwards from the headrest portion and a sunshade mounted on the support to shade at least the eyes of the user.
The sunshade in the present invention is held firmly in the desired position by the weight of the user on the headrest portion and remains in the desired position without needing to be steadied manually.
In the interest of comfort and portability, the cushion is preferably inflatable.
The cushion may consist exclusively of the headrest portion but alternatively it may be a mattress for supporting the whole body with the sunshade support extending upwards from the headrest portion.
The shade may be made of an opaque or transparent plastics material and is preferably adjustably mountedzon its support, to enable it to be positioned as desired in relation to the direction of the sun.
The support is preferably a pole extending upwards from the headrest portion of the cushion and may be secured thereto by means of a heat welded bracket.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings which is a schematic side view of a combined cushion and sunshade of the invention.
The single figure shows an inflatable annular cushion 10 which acts as a headrest and has a retractable inflator 12 to enable it to be inflated by mouth.
A plastics bracket 14 is heat welded to the cushion 10 and has a socket 15 for receiving the lower end of a support pole or stem 16. A sheet 18 of opaque plastics material, which acts as a sunshade, is secured by a stiff or lockable pivot pin 20 to the upper end of the pole 16.
In use, the cushion is inflated and used as a headrest.
While resting his head on the cushion 10, a user may adjust the position of the sunshade as desired by pivoting the sheet 18 about the pivot pin 20 or by rotating the pole 16 in its socket 15.
If desired, the sunshade may be made of a coloured plastics material as used in sun glasses.
Instead of being just a headrest, the cushion could be an inflatable mattress or lilo with the sunshade supported above the headrest portion of the cushion.
