Automatic gear. - In a steam-engine from which intermediate steam is withdrawn for auxiliary purposes, and in which the intermediate pressure affects a piston actuating the control gear of one or more cylinders, means are provided to relieve the piston of the back pressure of the gear. The piston-rod, Fig. 1, is formed as a rack and rotates against the resistance of a spring m, a pinion e on a shaft f provided with a wheel k and a weight. The shaft f through screw-and-nut gear h, g moves the control link c. In another construction, Fig. 3, the endwise movement of the piston-rod b, which is non-rotatable and has a steep screw-thread n, rotates an externally square-threaded nut q and moves longitudinally an outer nut r to actuate the link c. In a modification, the screw n rotates an eccentric carrying a control link.
