Abstract

Non-reactice steering-mechanism.-In order to prevent the transmission of shocks from the road wheels to the steering hand-wheel a screwthreaded part is slidably mounted on the steering- shaft, and means, such as springs, are provided which act on the screw-threaded part, damp out the shocks and return the screw to its normal position after displacement. A worm 6 is slidably keyed on the steering-shaft 1 and is normally held in a central position in the casing 3 by springs 11, 12. The worm engages with a worm-wheel 9 actuating the steering-wheels through the usual arm 4 and rod 5. The damping of shocks may be assisted by the use of liquid in the spaces provided for the springs, passages 13, 14 being provided for the passage of the liquid from one end to the other. Screw-and-nut gear may be used instead of worm and-wheel.
