Abstract

A detachable screen for a motorcycle, which gives improved weather protection and aerodynamics, comprises a transparent windscreen portion (6) mounted on an arched tubular frame (2, 4) having front attachment means (8, 10) and rear attachment means (16, 18) for attachment to the motorcycle body. In use the screen passes over the rider and protects him from the weather. A windscreen wiper (22, 24, 26) may be mounted on the screen. <IMAGE>

Description

DETACHABLE MOTORCYCLE SCREEN The present invention relates to a detachable screen for a motorcycle, which gives improved protection from adverse weather conditions.
Conventional motorcycles usually have a more or less upright screen which extends in front of the rider and gives some protection against the wind and rain. Nevertheless, conventional windscreens are generally fairly short so that the rider has to crouch behind them; and moreover there are practical problems in fitting effective windscreen wipers.
Forward vision during rainy conditions is therefore substantially impaired.
It is an object of the present invention to mitigate these problems.
The present invention provides a detachable screen for a motor cycle, which comprises a transparent front view windscreen portion which extends over the head of a motorcycle rider, and front and rear attachment means for attaching the windscreen to the front and rear of the body of the motorcycle respectively.
Generally, the windscreen portion is attached to a tubular metal frame which has front attachment means at the front thereof and the rear attachment means at the rear thereof.
The transparent windscreen portion extends over the head of the rider to substantially the rear of the motorcycle. This gives good protection to the rider from above, and also reduces the wind resistance of the motorcycle. However, it is generally necessary that the screen be left open at the lateral sides thereof to enable the motorcycle to be mounted.
The relatively rigid nature of the screen allows a conventional windscreen wiper means and washer means to be conveniently mounted on the screen. The windscreen wiper means generally comprises a single or double wiper blade driven by an electric motor. The motor may be mounted either at the base of the windscreen portion or above the head of the rider.
The front and rear attachment means allow the windscreen to be attached directly or indirectly to the front and rear of the motorcycle body. Mounting the screen to the body at the front of the motorcycle is generally done so that the windscreen portion passes in front of the handlebars, so as not to impede movement of the handlebars when steering the motorcycle.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a screen for a motorcycle; and Figure 2 is a front view thereof.
The screen comprises a pair of arched tubular frame members 2,4 having supported thereon a transparent windscreen 6, which overlaps the edges of the frame members and is attached thereto, for example by means of rivets. As shown in the drawing, the windscreen extends almost the full length of the frame members so as to completely cover the motorcycle rider.
A pair of front attachment plates 8,10 for bolting to apertures 12, 14 in the frame members are provided for fixing the front of the screen to the front of the body of the motorcycle. Similar plates 16,18 are provided for fixing the rear of the screen.
At the front, an opaque web 20 interconnects the frame members and is welded thereto.
A windscreen wiper and washer mechanism is mounted on the top of the screen and comprises a wiper blade 22, arm 24 and motor 26. The wiper is actuated as required by means of a switch on the handlebars (not shown) and is operated from the motorcycle battery.
The screen is mounted on the motorcycle by use of the front and rear mounting plates. Once attached, the screen allows the motorcycle to be mounted from either side thereof, and protects the rider from the worst of the weather. The arched profile of the screen also improves the aerodynamic properties of the motorcycle.
In rain, the windscreen wiper may be operated to give good forward vision.
