Abstract

An infra-red radiation source includes a sealed transparent tube. An electrical conductor extends through the tube so that the ends of the conductor are accessible at the ends of the tube. The inner or outer surface of the tube is at least partially covered with a layer of an infra-red radiation absorbing material. In operation the source is energised to red heat temperature by passage of an electric current through the conductor. The tube accordingly assumes a burnt or partially burnt appearance in dependence upon the area of the inner or outer surface of the tube which is covered by the infra-red radiation absorbing layer. The tube may be of quartz and the absorbing material copper oxide, iron oxide or boron carbide. <IMAGE>

Description

INFRA-RED RADIATION SOURCE This invention relates to an infra-red radiation source.
Simulated domestic coal and wood fires are popular, and can be fuelled by gas or electricity. There is thus a need for devices which can be used to simulate the burning material of such a fire, and the present invention is particularly concerned with such a device for use in an electricity fuelled fire.
According to this invention there is provided an infra-red radiation source comprising a sealed transparent tube having an electrical conductor extending therethrough with the ends of the electrical conductor accessible at the ends of the tube, the inner or outer surface of the tube being at least partially covered with a layer of an infra-red radiation absorbing material.
When the source of the invention is energised by passage of an electric current through the electrical conductor, the tube assumes a burnt or partially burnt appearance when energised to red heat temperature in dependence upon the area of the inner or outer surface of the tube covered by the infra-red radiation absorbing layer. Thus, if a plurality of such sources, possibly each in the form of a wooden log or twig, or a lump of coal, are stacked together and energised, the appearance of a burning fire is obtained, the sources also radiating infra-red radiant energy to warm the environment.
Other artificial (or real) combustible material such as coal or wood can be added to the stack of sources to obtain the required effect.
Preferably the tube is of ceramic material, for example quartz, and the ends thereof can be sealed in any convenient manner, for example using a fire cement.
The electrical conductor is perferably a metal wire, and can be either straight or coiled. Other forms of electrical conductor can be used, for example carbon fibre conductors.
The tube can be evacuated or contain a suitable gas at sub-atmospheric pressure.
The energy emitted by the source of the invention can be controlled by control of the electrical heating current supplied to the electrical conductor, while the thermal response of the source will be dependent upon the mass of the infra-red radiation absorbing layer.
The infra-red radiation absorbing layer can be of, for example, copper oxide, boron carbide or iron oxide.
The drawing shows diagrammatically the basis for a simulated domestic fire comprising a fire place 1 containing a plurality of sources 2 according to the invention arranged in a stack together with pieces 10 of artificial coal. Each source 2, when energised, provides regions 3 which glow and regions 4 which assume a burnt or partially burnt appearance.
