Casting-appatatus ; casting slag. - The heat from continuously cast slag &c. is extracted in an enclosed space by air or other cooling fluid, which is then passed through steam generators, or furnaces &c. in order that the extracted heat may be utilized. Molten slag is supplied ta rolls b, Fig. 1, that pick up a film or band and pass it over perforated and stepped cooling surfaces d, on which it may be broken up by tilt hammers g, the pieces falling into hoppers h with closing cones k and discharge doors l. Air is drawn from the steam generator by a pipe o and a blower p delivers part of the air under pressure to outlets t under the cooling surfaces d. A second blower s delivers the remainder of the air at a higher pressure to the hoppers h. All the air eventually passes in a heated condition at n to the steam generator, superheater, and feedwater heater m. The tilt hammers may be replaced by crushing rolls or the strips may be delivered unbroken for use as slates, flagstones, &c. Air heated as above may be passed direct into a metallurgical furnace, the circuit for the air in this case not being a closed one. The apparatus may be employed in connection with the liquid slag type of gas generators, permitting the use of fuels rich in ash. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes several forms of casting-apparatus. In one form slag &c. is fed by a trough a, Fig. 1, and passes under a partition f to a cylinder b which delivers by a hopper c to a cooling-incline d. The cylinder may be arranged to form a part of the containing surface of the trough and may be roughened or grooved to form bands of particular shapes. The material may leave between a pair of rolls b, b', Fig. 6 (Cancelled), and may be finished by a further pass if desired without reheating. Whein a continuous mill is employed cooling jets of air may impinge on the material between the passes. A pair of rolls b, Fig. 9 (Cancelled), may form the bottom of the trough, two bands being formed simultaneously, the rolls b<1> being optional. The rolls b may be inclined, surplus material being delivered at the lower end to a similar pair of rolls b<11>, Fig. 11 (Cancelled). Further roll pairs may be employed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
