Abstract
481,379. Metal - heating furnaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HARLOW, E. C. G., and SMITHELLS, C. J. Nov. 4, 1936, No. 30045. [Class 51 (ii)] In. a continuous furnace for heating separate metal sheets comprising a heating chamber 1 and a water-jacketed cooling chamber 2, the latter is fitted, adjacent its exit end, with one or more rotatable water-cooled drums, means being provided. to force the drum or drums into good thermal contact with the sheets. In the form shown, two superposed drums 7, 7<1> are provided, the upper drum 7 being mounted in semicircular bearings 19 which are vertically movable, to adjust the position of the drum in relation to the thickness of the sheets, bv a cam 22 on which rests a cross-piece 21 carried by vertical rods 20. The supply and discharge pipes for the cooling water are accommodated in one of the trunnions 12, 12<1> of the drums. The lower drum 7<1> may be replaced by rollers similar to those forming the furnace conveyer 8, 9, while the drum or drums may be spring-loaded so as to be pressed into better thermal contact with the sheets.
