Abstract

289,812. Sundwiger Eisenh³tte Maschinenbau-Akt.-Ges. May 2, 1927, [Convention date]. Plates and sheets.-In hot rolling of brass or other metals a large reduction at one heat is obtained by utilizing one pass through rolls with a slow surface speed and sufficient friction to draw in the metal. For brass a speed of 0.1 to 5 m. per min. may be employed. The roll surface is roughened by sand blast or other mechanical or chemical means and the diameter of each roll must be sufficient to ensure that the angle subtended at the axis by the metal in contact with the roll is smaller than 30‹. The rolls F are arranged close to a furnace E, filled with inert gas, through which the plates b are fed by rolls G. If a gap exists between rolls and furnace the plates are kept hot by a refractory trough or conduit. Each roll may be heated by a device X, Fig. 6, and may consist of an annulus R of high speed steel or like metal insulated at T from its water-cooled spindle S, or of a body U, Fig. 7, of high-speed steel with insulated water-cooled annuli V on its journals. Castings may be rolled without reheating by arranging the rolls at the bottom of a mould L, Fig. 4, so as to act continuously or intermittently on the solidified metal. In another modification the mould N, Fig. 5, is turned about trunnions O after the casting has solidified and this is then fed to the rolls by a pusher P.
