Abstract

A printed circuit board is provided with a stiffening strip (14) to increase the rigidity of the board. The stiffening strip consists of a channel-shaped aluminium extrusion, mounted on the board by spacers (15) which hold the strip in spaced- apart relationship with the board, so that it does not interfere with the placement of components (13) on the board. <IMAGE>

Description

Printed Circuit Board Background to the invention This invention relates to printed circuit boards (PCBs).
Complex electronic equipment, such as computer apparatus, is conventionally constructed in the form of a number of PCBs, interconnected by a backplane. Each PCB carries a number of components, such as integrated circuit packages, and has one or more connectors mounted along one edge of the board. These connectors mate with corresponding connectors on the backplane.
In such an arrangement, because of the inherent flexibility of the boards, it may be difficult to mate the connectors accurately. This problem becomes particularly acute if the board is large, or if a number of separate connectors are used on each board.
The object of the present invention is to overcome this problem.
Summary of the invention According to the invention there is provided a printed circuit board having at least one connector along one edge of the board, and having a rigid stiffening strip disposed parallel to said edge of the board, the stiffening strip being mounted on the board by means of spacers which hold the stiffening strip in spaced-apart relationship with the board.
It can be seen that the stiffening strip provides increased rigidity for the board. Moreover, because the strip is mounted in spaced-apart relationship with the board, it does not occupy a significant amount of board area, since components can be mounted underneath the stiffening strip, where necessary.
Brief description of the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a printed circuit board.
Figures 2 and 3 are elevational views of the board in the directions of arrows II and III in Figure 1.
Description of an embodiment of the invention One printed circuit board (PCB) in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The PCB 10 has three connectors 11 mounted along the rear edge 12 of the board. In use, these connectors mate with corresponding connectors (not shown) on a backplane, so as to form the required electrical connections between the board and the backplane. The PCB carries a number of integrated circuit components 13, only some of which are shown for simplicity.
The PCB carries a stiffening strip 14, consisting of an aluminium extrusion of U-shaped or channel-shaped section. The stiffening strip is mounted on the PCB, parallel to the rear edge 12, by means of spacers 15 which are press-fitted into holes in the strip 14 and in the PCB 10. The spacers 15 may be standard stand-off pins which are conventionally used to attach PCB sub-assemblies to a motherboard.
It can be seen that the spacers 15 hold the stiffening strip 14 in a spaced-apart relationship with the board, so that it does not significantly interfere with the placement of components on the board. In particular, components 13 can be mounted, where necessary, under the strip 14. In other words, the stiffening strip effectively does not occupy any significant area on the board, and does not substantially reduce the area of the board available for mounting components.
