Abstract
A tobacco cutter has a drive 7 for converging pressing chains 4, 6 defining a pressing channel 3 and a drive 16 for a rotary cutter drum 14 provided with cutter blades 13 for cutting tobacco slices from the pressed tobacco emerging from the pressing channel. The drives 7 and 16 are electric or hydraulic motors synchronized so as to maintain a constant thickness of cut of the tobacco slices. A maximum value for the rotational speed of the cutter motor 16 as set by transmitter 26 which provides a reference signal to control device 27. The power consumed by the cutter motor 16 is monitored by measuring transmitter 29 and composed in comparator 31 with a maximum value which must not be exceeded, if overloading of cutter motor 16 is to be avoided. If the maximum value is exceeded comparator 31 sends a signal to the control device 27 to limit the power supplied to the cutter motor 16. <IMAGE>
Description
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING A TOBACCO CUTTER The invention
relates to a method of controlling a tobacco cutter with a drive for converging pressing chains defining a pressing channel along which the chains are moved and a drive for a rotary cutter drum provided with cutter blades for cutting tobacco slices from the pressed tobacco emerging from the pressing channel.
The invention also relates to apparatus for controlling a tobacco cutter with a drive for converging pressing chains defining a pressing channel along which the chains are moved and a drive for a rotary cutter drum provided with cutter blades for cutting tobacco slices from the pressed tobacco emerging from the pressing channel.
In tobacco cutters of the aforementioned kind there are predetermined limits for the drive power of the drive of the cutter drum according to the most difficult cutting performance, i.e. the tobacco most unsuitable for the tobacco cutter. When cutting other tobaccos, e.g. so-called light tobacco, the capacity of the tobacco cutter is then not f ully utilised.
The object of the invention is to provide a control of the tobacco cutter in which this capacity is better exploited.
According to the invention this is achieved in that the theoretical values for the drive of the cutter drum are adjusted by reference to the maximum permissible values for the tobacco and that the electrical or hydraulic performance of the drive is monitored.
In an advantageous development of the invention the drive is maintained at a predetermined limit once this has been achieved.
The aforementioned apparatus is characterised in that a reference value transmitter for the rate of revolution of the drive and an actual value transmitter for the drive performance is provided.
According to an advantageous further embodiment of the invention the reference value transmitter is adjusted to the maximum permissible value. The actual value transmitter for the drive performance can be connected to a comparison element which on reaching a performance upper limit holds the same.
1 2 The advantage of the invention is that the capacity of the tobacco cutter can be fully utilised without overload, e.g. when cutting "difficulC tobacco when the cutting result deteriorates as a result for example of inexactly cut tobacco particles drawn out by the cutters.
The invention will now be further described by reference to one embodiment.
The tobacco cutter illustrated in the drawing has a supply region 1 for tobacco 2 leading directly into a pressing channel 3 which is formed by two pressing chains 4 and 6 disposed one above the other. The two pressing chains 4 and 6 are arranged to converge towards each other in the conveying direction, the lower pressing chain 6 being extended rearwardly with respect to the upper pressing chain 4 and limiting the supply region 1. The two pressing chains 4 and 6 are driven by a drive 7, the upper pressing chain 4 also being arranged to pivot about an axis 5 and being subject to the action of a pressure member 8. Adjoining the pressing chains 4 and 6 is a mouthpiece 9 with a moveable upper part 11 and rigid lower part 12 forming the counter cutter for cutters 13 arranged on the periphery of a cutter drum 14 driven bv a drive 16.
An oscillating conveying channel 17 leads into the supply region 1 and is driven by a motor 18 and an eccentric drive 19 and mounted on resilient oscillator blades 21 and 22.
The drives 7 and 16 may be controllable electrical or hydraulic motors. They are so synchronized in relation to each other that their rate of revolution is adjusted together in order to maintain constant the thickness of the tobacco layers cut by the cutters of the cutter drum even with different work rates (numbers of revolutions). Thus when only the control of the drive 16 of the cutter drum 14 is described below it should be noted that the number of revolutions of the drive 7 of the pressing chains 4 and 6 is correspondingly controlled in order to maintain constant the ratio of the number of revolutions between the drives.
The control of the drive 16 which may for example be constructed as an electrical DC motor has a reference value transmitter 26 for the number of revolutions of the drive 16 which transmits to a control device 17 a reference value corresponding to 3 the maximum permissable value. With so-called light tobaccos in which there is no danger of overloading the tobacco cutter, i.e. for example no quality penalties are to be feared in the cut product, the tobacco cutter is thereby driven at the maximum permissible drum revolutions and hence performance. The control device 27 for its part transmits a signal to an amplifier 28 which supplies the drive 16 with the corresponding electrical (or hydraulic) energy. The drive performance is received by a measured value transmitter 29 and then checked in a comparison member 31 to ascertain whether a predetermined performance has not been exceeded which would lead to overloading of the tobacco cutter. If the overload limit is reached then the comparison member 31 sends a signal to the control device 27 which limits the power supply from the amplifier 28 to the drive 16 of the cutter drum 14.
In this way for suitable tobaccos a maximisation of capacity of the tobacco cutter is ensured without the risk of overload with difficult-tocut tobaccos leading for example to cutting deterioration.
