Abstract

An anti-theft steering lock for motor vehicles includes an auxiliary safety device for preventing the accidental movement of the latch from its retracted release position to its advanced locking position when the anti-theft device is in the travelling position. The auxiliary safety device comprises an elongate retaining member (13) which is mounted for free rotation about its own axis and the ends (17, 15) of which cooperate respectively with a stop appendage (18) projecting from the latch and a cam surface (16) carried by a rotary operating shaft (4). The retaining member (13) holds the latch in the retracted release position as long as the operating shaft (4) remains in the travelling position. The rotary operating shaft is rotated by turning the key of an associated barrel lock. <IMAGE>

Description

AN ANTI-THEFT STEERING LOCK FOR MOTOR VEHICLES The present invention relates in general to anti-theft steering locks for motor vehicles.
More particularly, the invention relates to an anti-theft steering lock of the type comprising: - a support body, - a latch which is slidable through an aperture in the body between a retracted release position and an advanced locking position, - an operating shaft which can be rotated between a stop position and a travelling position by means of a key-operated lock, in order to move the latch between the advanced position and the retracted position, and - locking means adapted to prevent the accidental movement of the latch from the retracted position to the advanced position when the shaft is in the travelling position.
The object of the present invention is to provide a steering lock of the type defined above which is composed of a limited number of parts and which operates simply and safely.
According to the present invention, this object is achieved by the provision of a steering lock of the type specified above, characterised in that the locking means comprise an elongate retaining member mounted for free rotation about its own axis in the support body and having a first end which cooperates with a cam surface carried by the shaft and a second end which cooperates with a portion of the latch, whereby the second end of the retaining member is brought into engagement with the portion of the latch as a result of the rotation of the operating shaft from the stop position to the travelling position and keeps the latch in the retracted release position as long as the operating shaft remains in the travelling position.
Characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become clear from the detailed description which follows with reference to the appended drawings, provided by way of non-limiting example, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lock according to the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the lock of Figure 1 without its outer casing, Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the lock of Figure 2, Figure 4 is a perspective view of some parts forming the lock according to the invention, on an enlarged scale, Figure 5 is a section taken on the line V-V of Figure 1, Figure 6 is a section taken on the line VI-VI of Figure 5, Figures 7 and 8 are sections taken on the line Vil-Vil of Figure 5 in two different operating configurations, and Figures 9 and 10 are sections taken on the line IX-IX of Figure 1 in two different operating configurationS corresponding to those of Figures 7 and 8.
With reference to the drawings, an anti-theft steering lock according to the present invention is indicated 1.
The lock 1 includes a casing 2 with a tubular portion 3 at one end of which is mounted a lock S which can be operated by means of a key C in known manner. An operating shaft 4 mounted for rotation within the tubular portion 3 is fixed torsionally to the cylinder of the lock S and is movable between a travelling position and a stop position.
The lock 1 includes a support body 5 carrying a latch 6 which is mounted for sliding in an aperture 7 formed in a closure element 8. The latch 6 is urged by a helical spring 9 towards an advanced position in which it locks the steering column (not shown).
In known manner, the lock 1 is provided with transmission means which hold the latch 6 in a retracted position, in which the steering column is released, when the operating shaft 4 is in the travelling position. In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the transmission means comprise a rocker arm 10 one end of which is articulated to a shaped arm 11; the operation of the transmission means is described in detail in Italian utility model application No. 53080 B/86.
The lock according to the invention is also provided with an auxiliary safety device for preventing the accidental movement of the latch 6 from the retracted release position to the advanced locking position when the operating shaft 4 is in the travelling position.
According to the invention, the auxiliary device comprises a retaining member 13 constituted by a bent metal wire having a central portion 14 which is housed and freely rotatable in a seat 14a of the support body 5. One end 15 of the retaining member 13 is bent like a crank and bears against a cam surface 16 carried by the operating shaft 4. The other end of the retaining member 13 is bent so as to form a retaining hook 17 which cooperates with a stop appendage 18 projecting from the body of the latch 6.
Figures 7 and 9 show the position assumed by the crank 15 and the retaining hook 17 of the retaining member 13 when the latch 6 is in the advanced locking position which corresponds to the stop position of the shaft 4.
In this condition, the cam 16 does not exert any force on the crank 15 and the latch 6 is therefore free to be brought into its locking position by the action of the spring 9.
Figures 8 and 10 are views which correspond to Figures 7 and 9 with the latch 6 in the retracted release position. In this configuration, the operating shaft 4 has been rotated to the travelling position and the cam 16 retains the latch 6 in the retracted position by means of the rocker arm 10 and the shaped arm 11. The cam 16 acts on the crank 15 and at the same time imparts a rotary movement to the retaining member 13, bringing the retaining hook 17 to the position shown in Figure 10. In this configuration, the retaining member 13 keeps the latch 6 in the retracted position even in the event of a breakage in the transmission system 10, 11.
