Description

$ - - i :2 17:2 1 ES 1 Intake device for the combustion air of a motor
vehicle front engine The invention relates to an intake device for the combustion air of a motor vehicle engine in which the combustion air is sucked in through an opening in the body and supplied to the combustion through an intake line.
In the case of such intake devices, known, for example, from EP 0 122 254 Al, among others, rainwater can penetrate into the intake duct and from there into the engine combustion spaces under unfavourable circumstances.
The present invention seeks to overcome this problem and also to reduce the intake noises.
According to the present invention there is provided an intake device for the combustion air of a motor vehicle engine in which the combustion air is sucked in through an opening in the body and supplied to the combustion spaces of the engine through an intake line, wherein downstream of the intake opening in the front portion of the body, a space, which is wide compared with this opening and the cross-section of the intake line, of a chamber is located in which the openings for taking in and sucking out the combustion air are opposite one another without being aligned and/or are covered with respect to one another by a partition wall protruding freely into the space of the chamber, and a water drainage opening is provided in the bottom area of the chamber.
Puttiner a chamber into the air intake line, in which the intake and outlet openings are opposite one another without being aligned and/or are covered with respect to one another by a partition wall has the effect that water which has penetrated through the intake opening in the front portion of the body can become deposited and thus not reach the intake line to the engine combustion spaces.
In addition, the expansion of volume given by the chamber in the air intake path leads to an attenuation of the air intake noise.
spaces of the engine 2 Deposited water can be drained through an opening which can be provided in the bottom of the chamber.
The drawing shows three illustrative embodiments of the invention, in which:
Figure 1 shows the intake device invention in a diagrammatic top compartment of a vehicle; Figure 2 shows the intake device according to the invention in a diagrammatic top view of an engine compartment with an intake air duct which meanders, and Figure 3 shows in a partial top view of an engine compartment the construction of the meandering intake air duct by means of installed components on the vehicle side.
The engine 1 is encapsulated in a completely soundinsulating manner in the engine compartment 2. In this arrangement, the encapsulated space is separated from the front portion of the vehicle with the headlights 3 and the radiator 4 by means of a separating wall 5.
The cooling air penetrating through the radiator 4 does not pass into the encapsulated engine compartment but is removed from the engine compartment 2 by means of a separately partitioned duct 6. The duct 6 is limited, on the one hand, by the separating wall 5 and by the duct walls 7 connected laterally to the radiator 4.
For supplying combustion air into the engine compartment 1, an intake line 8 penetrates through the separating wall 5, ending there, coming from the engine 1. At the front portion of the vehicle, the combustion air needed by the engine is sucked in through an opening 9 which is arranged between at least one of the headlights 3 and the radiator 4. To receive this combustion air taken in, a closed chamber 10, which is enlarged several times comDared with the flow cross-section for the intake air, is provided between the opening of the intake line 8 located in the separating wall 5 and the opening 9 located in the front portion of the motor vehicle. At the bottom of this chamber 10, a water drainage opening 11 for removing water separated in this chamber, which cai be according to the view of an engine 1 3 entrained through the opening 9 under certain operating conditions, is located. The position of the opening of the intake line 8 in the separating wall is geodetically higher than the opening 9 leading into the chamber 10. This prevents water partially penetrating through the opening 9 from being able to pass into the intake line 8. This is because the intake line 8 must not contain any more water since this would impede the combustion in the engine combustion spaces.
Some of the boundary walls of the chamber 10 can be formed by the walls 7 and 5 and by the front and adjoining lateral front portion of the vehicle.
In the case of engines needing more than one intake line 8, particularly Vtype engines, a further chamber 10, which is connected to the engine 1 via an additional intake line 12, can be located behind the headlight 3 located on the other side of the radiator 4.
According to Figure 2, the intake device comprises a chamber 13 which extends laterally along the engine 1 from the vehicle front. This chamber 13 is bounded by the vehicle body and a duct wall 14 which laterally leads past the engine 1 from the radiator 4 in the engine compartment 2. A separating wall 15 which ends at the duct wall 14 extends between engine 1 and radiator 4. In the chamber 13, several, for example wedge- shaped walls 16 are installed offset with respect to one another, by means of which a meandering intake air duct 17 is formed between the opening 9 and the intake line 8. To attenuate the noise, the surface of the intake air duct 17 can be covered with an absorption material 18. It is also possible to design the distances between the walls 16 to be different in order to obtain different duct crosssections and thus an intake air duct with a wide-band frequency spectrum.
In distinction from the illustrative embodiment of Figure 2, in the embodiment of Figure 3, the walls 16 are formed by components 19 at the vehicle side, such as, for example, the battery.
