Abstract

A clamp assembly 10 has outer members 11, 13 and an intermediate member 12. Flanges 15, 16, 24, 25, 15a, 16a extend from the members and in use embrace sides of two square section transverse elongate elements extending respectively between members 11, 12 and 12, 13. A bolt 26 extends through apertures in the members and elements and receives a threaded knob 30 to clamp the assembly. The flanges resist relative rotation of each element and between the elements. The shape of the elements may vary, with corresponding variation in the shapes of the flanges. <IMAGE>

Description

CLAhlPS This invention relates to clamps and clamp assemblies.
According to this invention a clamp comprises first and second members and an intermediate member between the first and second members, the members being adapted to receive a first elongate element between the first and intermediate members and a second elongate element between the intermediate and second members with the elongate elements transverse to each other, the elements having respective axes, and means for holding the members in clamping engagement with the elements, the intermediate member being shaped to resist relative rotation of the elements about an axis transverse to the elements, the first and intermediate members being shaped to resist rotation of the first element about its axis, and the intermediate and second members being shaped to resist rotation of the second elongate element about its axis.
The holding means may comprise a bolt extending through the elements and members.
The first member may have a base and spaced flanges extending from the base for engaging opposite sides of the first element. The second member may have a base and spaced flanges extending from the base for engaging opposite sides of the second element. The intermediate member may have a base and flanges extending from the base for engaging said opposite sides of the first element and said opposite sides of the second element.
The bases may be flat with straight edges from which the respective flanges extend.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side view of a clamp assembly in operative position; and Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the clamp assembly.
A clamp assembly 10 comprises first or outer, intermediate and second or outer members 11, 12, 13 each for example moulded of plastics. The member 11 has a square base 14 with parallel flat flanges 15, 16 extending towards the member 13 from two parallel sides.
A central circular boss 17 is on the outer face 18 of base 14 and a central aperture 19 extends through the boss 17 and the base 14. The outer face of the boss 17 is provided with a recess 20 having an inner part 20a with a hexagonal periphery.
The member 13 is similar to the member 11 but the boss 21 does not have a recess 20. In use the flanges 15a, 16a on member 13 are at right angles to the flanges 15, 16 on member 11.
The member 12 has a flat square base 22 with a central aperture 23 and flat parallel flanges 24 extending from one pair of opposite sides towards member 11 and flat parallel flanges 25 extending from the other pair of sides towards member 11.
In use the flanges 15, 16 are respectively coplanar with flanges 24 and flanges 15a, 16a are respectively coplanar with flanges 25.
The clamp assembly includes an externally threaded bolt 26 which in use extends through the apertures in the members 11 to 13 and at one end has a hexagonal head 27 received in hexagonal recess 20a. At the other end the bolt 26 redeives a nut 28 fixed in the outer face 29 of a plastics knob 30 so that the knob can be rotated to tighten the assembly which is used (Fig. 1) to clamp together two square section hollow tubes 31, 32 at right angles to each other.
The bolt 26 extends through apertures 33 in opposite sides 34, 35 of each of the tubes. The bases 14, 22 engage the outer faces of the sides 34, 35 of tube 31 and the bases 14a, 22 engage the outer faces of sides 34, 35 of tube 32.
Flanges 15, 16; 24 embrace the other sides 36, 37 of tube 31 and flanges 15a, 16a; 25 embrace the other sides of the tube 32.
The intermediate member 12 thus resists relative rotation between the tubes 31, 32 about the bolt 26; the members 11, 12 resist rotation of tube 31 about its own axis; the members 12, 13 resist rotation of tube 32 about its own axis.
Sliding movement of tube 31 or 32 along its on axis is resisted by bolt 26 extending through the tubes, and by frictional grip of the clamp assembly.
The hexagonal head of the bolt in the hexagonal recess resists rotation of the bolt 26 as the knob 30 is tightened.
In modifications the cross-section of tubes 319 32 differs from that shown and the shapes of members 11 to 13 are changed accordingly. Thus tubes 31, 32 could be rectangular, or circular, in cross-section.
The tubes need hot be at right angles to each other but could be at another transverse angle with the positions of the flanges altered accordingly so the flanges embrace the respective tube or other elongate, member.
