Description

Decription of Invention Improvements in or relating to a screening system The present invention relates to a screening system and more particularly relates to a screening system for use in the building industry.
When a new building is being built, or when an existing building is being refurbished, the building is often surrounded by scaffolding and it is now becoming conventional to apply, to such scaffolding, sheets of an appropriate impervious material which form a weather protection screen. Such a screen protects the building in itself from the elements, and also provides a better working environment for workmen working on the building.
The present invention seeks to provide a screen to be mounted directly upon the building itself.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a protection screen to be mounted on a building, said screen comprising a sheet of substantially impermeable material, means to secure one edge of the sheet to a ceiling, and means to secure a lower region of the sheet to a floor.
Preferably the means to secure the lower region of the screen to the floor comprises a plurality of springs or other resilient element, spaced apart and anchored to the floor, the springs engaging means which are secured to the screen.
Conveniently the means secured to the screen comprise substantially vertically extending elements secured to the screen, each vertically extending element having a lower terminal portion extending away from the screen, and not secured thereto.
Alternatively the means secured to the screen comprise fixed loops or anchors.
Preferably the vertically extending elements comprise straps or the like, each strap being secured to the screen over substantially the whole of its length, the lower terminal portion of the strap extending from the screen and being secured to said spring or other resilient means.
Advantageously the strap is stitched or heat welded to the screen.
Preferably the upper edge of said sheet is in the form of a bead, and a track is provided, secured to the ceiling, adapted to receive said bead, comprising the means to secure the sheet to the ceiling.
Conveniently the track is an extruded track of plastics material. Alternatively the track may be formed- of pressed steel or extruded aluminium or an alloy thereof. The track may be associated with a timer batten.
Preferably the track defines a channel into which the bead may be inserted by moving the bead axially of the track.
Alternatively the track defines a channel adapted to receive the bead with a snap action.
Preferably the sheet comprises a PVC laminate reinforced with a nylon net.
In one embodiment a further sheet is secured to said sheet, said further sheet having thermal and/or sound insulating properties.
Preferably the said further sheet is made fo a foamed plastics material.
Conveniently the further sheet is secured to said sheet by means of interengaging elements of hook and loop material.
The screen may incorporate a substantially horizontal reinforcing element.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, and so that further features thereof may be appreciated, the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a weather protection screen in accordance with the invention mounted on a building, FIGURE 2 is an enlarged view of part of the screen illustrating the means of fixing the screen to the ceiling, FIGURE 3 is an enlarged view of a further part of the screen showing the method of fixing to the screen to the floor, FIGURE 4 is a view corresponding to Figure 2 showing another embodiment of the invention, FIGURE 5 is a view of part of another embodiment of the invention, and FIGURE 6 is a view of part of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates part of a building that is under construction or being refurbished. The drawing illustrates a lower concrete slab 1 and an upper concrete slab 2. Each of the concrete slabs forms a floor and also forms a ceiling.
A protection screen 3 is provided having its upper edge secured to the ceiling constituted by the upper slab 2, and having a lower region secured to the floor constituted by the lower slab 1 so that the screen is kept substantially in tension.
Figure 2 illustrates the upper part of the screen 3. It can be seen that the upper edge of the screen 3 is provided with a continuous bead 4 along its upper edge.
The bead 4 is adapted to be received within a channel 5 defined in an extruded plastics material track 6 which is secured to the ceiling constituted by the upper slab 2. The track 6 may be secured to the ceiling by adhesive, or by shot fired pins or the like.
The bead II may be slid axially into the channel 5 or may be pushed into the channel so that it is received therein with a snap action.
It is to be appreciated that a number of short lengths of the track 6 may be utilised instead of one very long track.
The screen 3 is preferably formed of an appro priate impervious material such as a PVC laminated sheet, the laminated sheet incorporating a reinforcing net which may be formed of nylon or the like.
At regular spaced intervals tension straps 7 are secured to the screen either by stitching or by heat welding. The tension straps may be formed of any suitable material, such as nylon webbing, reinforcing tape, or the like.
As can be seen in Figure 3, towards the lower edge 8 of the screen 3 the reinforcing straps 7 each terminate in a short strap portion 9 which is free from the screen 3. This portion 9 terminates in a loop 10 which is secured, by means of a ring 11 to one end of the spring 12. The other end of the spring 12 is secured to an anchor 13 which is shot fired into the concrete floor forming the upper surface of the lower concrete slab 1.
The anchors 13 are spaced apart with a spacing equal to that of the reinforcing straps 7. The arrangement is such that each spring 12 is under tension, thus applying tension to the tension strap 7, thus retaining the screen 3 in the desired position.
The lowermost part 8 of the screen 3 may be located to extend over the outer edge of the lower concrete slab 1.
Referring now to Figure 4 a modified embodiment of the invention is illustrated in which a sheet 14 is provided, at its upper edge, with a bead 15, the bead presenting a sloping under-surface 16 and a rearwardly facing abutment surface 17. The sheet is provided with re-inforcing straps 18.
The bead 15 is dimensioned to be received within a channel 19 formed in a track 20 secured to a roof or soffit 21. The track 20 is formed as an extrusion either of a plastics material or of an aluminium alloy.
The track is associated with a wooden batten 22 which is received within a recess formed in the upper part of the track. Nails, screws or fixing bolts 23 pass through a portion of the track defining the recess and pass through the wooden batten.
The channel 19 presents an upwardly extending lip 24 which engages the rear abutment face 17 provided on the bead 15 when the bead is slid into the channel 19 formed on the track 20. The channel 20 may be such that the bead has to be slid axially into the channel or, alternatively, the track 20 may be such that the bead 15 may be inserted into the channel with a snap action.
Whilst the invention has been described with reference to embodiments of channel made of extruded plastics or extruded aluminium or an alloy thereof it is to be appreciated that in alternative embodiments of the invention the track may be made from sheet metal, such as sheet steel.
Figure 5 illustrates a modified embodiment of the invention in which a sheet 25 is provided with vertical spaced apart re-inforcing straps 26. Towards their lower regions each strap 26 is provided with a "D" ring 27 to which an anchoring spring such as the spring 12 may be affixed. Mounted on each strap 26 is a plurality of elements 28 of a hook or loop material, such as sold under the Registered Trade Mark VELCRO. A second sheet of material is provided with corresponding elements 30 of loop or hook material as sold under the Registered Trade Mark VELCRO and the arrangement is such that the elements 28 and 30 may be pressed together to secure the second sheet 29 to the first sheet 25. The second sheet 29 is formed of a cellulor plastics material and thus presents heat insulating and thermal insulating properties. It will be understood that when the second sheet 29 has been secured in position on the first sheet 25, there will be a considerable improvement in the working environment defined by the sheet 25.
Figure 6 illustrates a further modified embodiment of the invention in which a sheet 31, provided with vertical reinforcing straps 32 is provided with a further element of sheeting 33 secured thereto by stitching 34 so as to form a horizontally extending pocket or "tunnel11. Received within this pocket or "tunnel" is an elongate cable or wire 35 which may be tensioned to appropriate supports mounted on the building. The cable or wire 35 thus functions as a safety device, acting in the manner of a safety barrier.
It is to be appreciated that the invention, as described, may be utilised on a new building, or on an old building undergoing refurbishment to provide a weather protection screen, if the screen is located around the outer periphery of the concrete slabs forming the floors and ceilings of the building. However but the screen may also be mounted in position in other locations, where it can screen particular areas of the building where excessive quantities of dust are being generated, for example, from the rest of the building.
