2 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
3 Traditional automobile bumpers are commonly 4 welded with the chassis to protect automobiles from shocks caused by accidents and drivers from harm. But they have little proper action as a buffer to avoid a strong shock. Besides, a bumper equipped with an oil pressure has once been made by some makers to furnish a bumper with some shock abeorbing movement. However. as the oil stored in the bumper is definite, so the oil pressure can make the bumper to move quickly back and forth repeatedly to easily cause a concussion to the driver's brain when a colliding accident should happen to the car. And a concussion of.a brain does not occur in case of a collision only.
Therefore, this two-stage automobile bumper has been devised to supply a kind of better improved bumper for care.

3 This invention concerns a two-stage automobile 4 bumper which comprises two outer supporting frames welded with the chassis, an inner supporting frame contained in each outer supporting frame. Said inner supporting frame Is provided with an upper guide way and a lower guide way. said upper gtide way being for containing a buffer which is.combined with a bumper at its front end and with a slide block at its bottom.
A coiled-spring is placed between the slide block and the rear end of the inner-supporting frame. In case the bumper receives a shock, it pushes the buffer so that the buffer slides backward in the lower guide way and the pins keeping the buffer at its position in the upper guide way are to be shorn by the buffer, and the coiled spring is to be compressed by the slide block pulled by the buffer. and then said spring resiliently extends back. which makts up a shock absorbing action.

12 DETAIZED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
13 This two-stage automobile bumper comprises. as 14 shown in Figure 1, two outer supporting frames 1 welded with the chassis and protruding forward, two 16 Inner supporting frames 2 contained in said outer 17 supporting frames 1, a buffer 3 fixed in each of said 18 Inner supporting frames 32 and a bumper 4 itself is 19 assembled at the front end of said buffers 3.
The outer supporting frames 1 are welded together 21 with the front end of the chassisq one at the right 22 and the other at tfie leftg for containing and suppor 23 ting the inner supporting frames 2 and provided with 24 a flange 11 at its front end bored with round holes 12 for combining together said outer supporting frames 1 26 with said inner supporti ng frames 2 by means of bolts 27 272 and nuts 13.
28 Next, the inner supporting frames 2 are contained 1 1 1 2.

Said upper guide way 21 is for a buffer 3 to movably insert in, and said lower guide way 22 is for setting a coiled spring 23 and a slide block 24 In. On both sides of the upper face of said upper guide way 21 are separately provided with two screw holes 211 and a round hole 212 between said two screw holes.

Besides, said Inner supporting frames 2 are provided with a sealed rear end 25 and an empty hole 26 between said upper guide way 21 and said lower guide way '22. and.with two flanges 27. 28 at near the front end and at the front end. Said flange 27 is provided with screw holes 271 for assembling solidly said inner supporting frame 2 with said outer supporting frame 1 with screws 272, and said flange 28 is provided with screw holes 281 for fixing a faceplate 29 on by means of screws 282 and screw holes 291. Said fateplhte 29 is provided with a notch 292 at the upper part corresponding to.the upper guide way 21 so that the fuffer 3 can never be hampered in moving in 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 1 1 4 5 6 7 a 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 is 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 2 said way 21 freely back and forth.
3 1 The lower guide way 22 is provided with a rectan gular hole 20 at the bottom for a stop block 201 to insert therein from the underside protruding in said way 22. Said stop block 201 is fixed at the bottom of said way 22 by means of screws 204 and screw holes 202 and round holes 23 corresponding to each other.
Next, the buffer 3 is movably set in the upper guide way 21 and kept at its position steady in the - inner supporting frame 2 by means of two pins 215 stuck in the assembly holes 31 and the round holes 212.
The buffer 3 is also provided with a plurality of positioning holes 32 for combining the slide block 24 with the buffer 3 with screws 33. The slide block 24 Is hollow and reverse U-shaped and welded with a limit piece 241 at its top, said limit piece 241 together with the slide block 24 combined with the buffer 3 by means of the screws 33 and screw holes 242. Besides, a reverse U-shaed block 243 and a limit plate 244 are contained in the slide block 24 and constrained at their positions by a reverse L-shaped plate 245 such that both of them cannot-fall off. The standing-up part of the reverse L-shaped plate 245 stands on the bottom of the lower guide way 22t the horizontal part stuck at the upper end of a steel wire 246 which is welded at one side face of the slide block 24, and there is a proper gap 248 between said wire 246 and the notch 1 2 3 247 of the slide block 24 so as to be inserted by the reverse L-shaped plate 245. A faceplate 34 is provided 4 at the front end of the buffer 3 in order that the bumper 4 can be fixed together with the buffer 3 by 6 means of screws and roand holes 35.
7 Now, referring to Figures 2 and 3. under the 8 circumstance that the bumper 4 has not received a 9 shock yet, the coiled spring 23 and the slide block 24 are inside.the lower guide way 22 of the inner suppor ting frame 2. one end of said spring 23 resting on the rear end 25 of the in.ner supporting frame 2 and the other resting at the slide block 24; the buffer 3 is inside the upper guide way 21 positioned by the pins 215 and extending out of the car; besides, two layers of sponge 293 are attached on the faceplate 29 at the front of the lower,guide way 22; the slide block 24 including the reverse U-shaped block 243 and the limit plate 244 is at the position higher than that of the stop block 201.
Next, referring to Figures 4 and 5, under the circumstance that the bumper 4 has recei.ved a shock, the bumper 3 is pushed backward as the arrow marked in the figures so that the pins 215 could be cut into two pieces by the shearing force caused by the backward movement of the buffer 3, and simultaneously the slide block 24 could be carried backward by the buffer 3 to compress the coiled spring 23 to the largest 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 is 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 1 2 limit it can endure, and then said spring 23 could 3 resiliently extend to its original position, i.e. 4 forward.
Figures 6 and 7 show the action of this bumper 6 after the spring 23 is going to recover its position.
7 The slide block 24 and the buffer 3 are extended for 8 ward by the spring 23, and when the slide block 24 9 surpasses the location of the stop block-201 and collides with the sponge 293, it-is much possible that 11 the reverse L-shaped plate 245 is broken or detsined 12 at one side of the stop block 201; then the limit 13 plate 244 falls down after it surpasses the stop 14 block 201 and blocks the notch of the slide block 24, 15. in other words, said plate 244 falls on the bottom of 16 the lower guide way 22, situated lower then the stop 17 block 201 so that the buffer 3 cannot retreat even if 18 the buffer 3 should be moved back because the slide 19 block 24 is hampered by'the stop block 201.
In generalp the structure of this bumper is 21 equipped with -proper shock absorbing action in case 22 of collision, and the shock force is at the first 23 time absorbed by the coiled spring 23 and at the 24 second time responded directly by the bumper itself.
Therefore, repeated fast shocks can be avoided to 26 decrease the harm to the car, the driver or the 27 passengers in the car as less as possible. Especiallyt 28 the first shock force is absorbed by the breaking of 1 1 3 4 _ of the pins 215 and the compression of the spring 23. which may be considered to be the best method of shock absorbing.

Claims (8)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A two-stage automobile bumper comprising:
    two outer supporting f rames welded at the right and left sides of the front of the chassis, containing an inner supporting frame each and provided with a flange at the front end, said flange bored with round holes for assembling said outer supporting frame with said inner supporting frame; two inner supporting f rames to be contained in the outer supporting f rames, provided with an upper guide way and an lower guide way, said upper guide way being f or setting a buf f er therein, said lower guide way being f or setting a coiled spring and a slide block, said slide block combined at the bottom of the buf fer such that said slide block can move along the lower guide way, said lower guide way provided with a rectangular hole bored vertically through the bottom of said lower guide way f or a stop block to insert through extending in said lower guide way; two buf f ers each to be contained in the upper guide way of the inner supporting frames, combined together with said inner supporting frames by means of two pins and provided with positioning holes for screws to insert through in combining the -slide block together, said slide block provided with a limit plate which is constrained by a reverse L-shaped plate, and 1 - 10 a f aceplate provided at the front end of said buf f er f or assembling said buf f er with the bumper itself by means of screws and holes; and the feature that when the bumper receives a shock, the pins keeping the buf fers steady with the inner supporting f rames can be cut into two pieces, the buffers are retreated to compress the coiled springs, and then the springs automatically extend back pushing the buffers forward, said slide blocks being able to surpass the stop blocks, said reverse Lshaped plates being able to f all down so that the limit plates can fall down to hamper the buffers from retreating further again.

The two-stage automobile bumper as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inner supporting frames are provided with an upper guide way, a lower guide way and an empty hole between the upper and the lower guide ways, said slide block being able to move along the empty hole,, said lower guide way provided with a rectangular hole through its bottom for a stop block to insert in and to extend in the lower guide way.

The two-stage automobile bumper as claimed in claim 1, wherein the slide block hollow and reverse Ushaped, contains a reverse U-shaped block and a limit plate which are both constrained by a reverse L-shaped plate in the slide block so that the notch of the slide block can pass over the stop block set in the lower guide way.
  4. 4. The two-stage automobile bumper as claimed in claim 1, wherein the reverse L-shaped plate set at the slide block stands on the bottom of the lower guide way with its standing-up part, and extends to the limit steel wire set on the slide block with its horizontal part so that the limit plate can fall off to the bottom of the slide block after the reverse Lshaped plate is plucked down by the stop block when the buffer moves forward.

  5. 5. A bumper assembly for a vehicle including a bumper mounting arrangement comprising resilient means arranged to be compressed for absorbing shock af ter the bumper has received a shock load above a predetermined amount.

A bumper as claimed in claim 5, wherein said mounting arrangement comprises a first member mounted for sliding movement relative to a second member but secured against such movement by a shearable connection adapted to shear when the bumper receives a shock load above said predetermined amount, the arrangement being such that such relative sliding movement in one direction is resisted by compression of said resilient means.
  7. 7. A bumper as claimed in claim 6, further comprising blocking means operable after relative sliding movement of said first and second member in the opposite direction to said one direction on recovery of said resilient means for blocking further relative sliding movement of said member in said one direction.
  8. 8. A bumper assembly substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
