Abstract

A cavity wall tie, particularly for walls in which at least one leaf is constructed of hollow concrete blocks (20), comprises a flat bar 10 provided with engaging means at each end, at least one engaging means (11) of which comprises a back plate (12), preferably with a bracing lug (21), a slot (13) extending longitudinally in the bar 10, and a wedge (14) slidable in the slot (13) and preferably made captive therein by lateral lugs (15, 16), the load of the wedge (14) on the adjacent faces (19) of blocks (20) in adjacent courses being distributed by a loose plate (17) having a slot (18) fitting round the flat bar section. The positions of the plate 12 and of the wedge and slot may be reversed. The wedge and slot allows variations in the thickness of the walls of blocks 20 to be accommodated. <IMAGE>

Description

CAVITY WALL TIES This invention relates to cavity wall ties, particularly - but not exclusively - for use in cavity walls in which at least one leaf, but commonly each leaf, is constructed of hollow concrete blocks.
According to the present invention, a cavity wall tie comprises an elongate body of flat bar section provided with engaging means at each end, at least one of the engaging means comprising a back plate extending from at least one face of the elongate body, a slot extending longitudinally in the elongate body, and a wedge slidable in the slot.
The back plate and the wedge are adapted to embrace between them a side wall of a hollow concrete block - or to embrace a solid block or brick - with the sliding engagement of the wedge with the slot providing for variation in the effective distance between the wedge and the back plate to allow for tolerance in the thickness of the side walls of hollow conrete blocks - or the width of solid blocks or bricks.
A loose plate is preferably provided between the wedge and the back plate, with a slot in the loose plate fitting round the flat bar section of the elongate body, which loose plate serves to distribute the load of the wedge over more of the face of a block or brick or adjoining faces of blocks or bricks in adjoining courses.
The wedge is preferably captive in the longitudinal slot, as by being provided with a lateral lug at or adjacent each end of the wedge.
The back plate is preferably provided at the end of the elongate body, as by being bent from metal flat bar section, preferably with a lug punched out to extend from the opposite face of the elongate body, to guard against the back plate being bent back towards (or even into) the plane of the elongate body under tension in the tie when in use.
Alternatively, the back plate may be spaced from the end of the elongate body, as by being formed by punching and bending one or more lug portions out of metal flat bar section.
The engaging means at the other end of the elongate body may similarly comprise a back plate, longitudinal slot, and wedge (preferably with a loose plate) as described above, for similarly embracing a side wall of another hollow concrete block - or solid block or brick - or it may comprise a "fishtail" formed by slitting and splaying that other end of the flat bar section, for conventional embedding in mortar between courses of blocks or bricks. Yet again, the engaging means at the other end of the elongate body may be a bent or twisted end portion of the flat bar section, possibly with at least one hole therein, to enable that bent or twisted end portion to be secured to a structural member.
Suitable materials for cavity wall. ties in accordance with the present invention are similar to those used for existing ties, i.e., metal such as stainless steel or galvanised mild steel, or phosphor bronze or brass, but could even be formed of plastics, such as polypropylene.
A drip promoter or moisture trap may be provided in the mid-section of the cavity wall tie, as by providing a 18 twist in the flat bar section.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing one end of a cavity wall tie in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a plan of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line III-III in Figure 2 showing engagement with a block or brick; Figure 4 is a vertical section, on a smaller scale, showing a cavity wall tie in accordance with the invention with similar ends as in the preceding Figures and engaged with the side walls of hollow concrete blocks in the leaves of a cavity wally Figures 5 and 6 correspond to Figures 2 and 3 but shown an alternative formation of engaging means; and Figures 7 and 8 are fragmentary perspective views showing engaging means for use at the other end of cavity wall ties having engaging means as shown in Figures 1 to 3 or Figures 5 and 6 for securing of those other ends to structural members.
In Figures 1 to 3, a cavity wall tie comprises an elongate body lld of flat bar section provided with engaging means 11 at one end (the other end also being provided with engaging means such as llA in Figure 4, llB in Figure 7 or llC in Figure 8) comprising a back plate 12 extending from one face of the elongate body, a slot 13 extending longitudinally in the elongate body, and a wedge 14 slidable in the slot.
The wedge 14 is made captive in the slot 13 by providing a lug 15 adjacent one end and a lug 16 adjacent the other end, the lug 16 being bent out of the plane of the wedge after insertion of the wedge through the slot.
A loose plate 17 is provided between the wedge 14 and the. back plate 12, a slot 18 in the loose plate fitting round the flat bar section of the elongate body 1PI, to distribute the load of the wedge 14 over more of the adjoining faces 19 of blocks or bricks 2 in adjoining courses when, as shown in Figure 3, the blocks or bricks are embraced between the back plate 12 (and a lug 21 punched out to extend from the opposite face of the elongate body) and the wedge 14 abutting the loose plate 17.
The sliding engagement of the wedge 14 with the slot 13 provides for variation in the effective distance between the wedge (and loose plate 17) and the back plate 12 (and lug 21) to allow for tolerance in the thickness of the side walls 22 of hollow concrete blocks (see Figure 4) or the width of solid blocks or bricks.
In Figure 4 the cavity wall tie has engaging means llA at the other end of the elongate body 1 similar to the engaging means 11 in Figures 1 to 3, the engaging means 11, llA being shown in Figure 4 engaging the inner side walls 22, 22A of corresponding hollow concrete blocks 2, 2A in inner and outer leaves of a cavity wall.
It will be appreciated that the very positive engagement of the engaging means 11, 11A with the blocks 2, 2A enables compressive loads in the wall tie to be transmitted to and from the blocks without risk of disengagement of the time from the leaves and with minimal risk of damage to the blocks.
In the alternative formation of engaging means llX shown in Figures 5 and 6, the back plate is spaced from the end of the elongate body lX and formed by punching and bending a pair of lug portions 12X out of the flat bar section, and the wedge 14X is disposed in a slot 13X intermediate the end of the elongate body and the lug portions, a loose plate 17X again being provided between the wedge 14X and the back plate constituted by the lug portions 12X.
The engaging means llB shown in Figure 7 consists of a bent end portion 23 of the elongate body 1111 (or 1by), which end portion 23 is shown provided with a hole 24 therein to enable it to be secured to a structural member, while in Figure 8 the engaging means llC is formed by a twisted end portion 25 of the elongate body 18 (or 1pit) also shown provided with a hole 26, which hole may alternatively assist in keying the engaging means in a vertical mortar joint.
