Abstract
The clamp comprises a C shaped body 1 and a support sleeve 2. An adjusting bolt 3 and a positioning bolt 4 extend through one arm 5 of the body 1 and a compression pad 6 is attached to the other arm 7 of the body 1. The clamp is used to clamp a scaffolding pole 6 onto H beam 9. The body 1 slots over the pole 8 and the arm 7 fits over the side of the H beam 9. By adjusting the adjusting bolt 3 and positioning bolt 4, the support sleeve 2 is brought into contact with the pole 8 and tightened against it, to 8 and H beam 9 together. The compression pad 6 spreads the load between the arm 7 of the clamp body 1 and the beam 9 and this together with the gripping of the pole 8 by the support beam 2 ensures that the likelihood of the clamp slipping is minimised. Figure 2 illustrates an embodiment with circlip 10 for retaining bolt 4 and a plug 11 in socket 12 in support sleeve engaged by bolt 3. <IMAGE>
Description
Scaffolding Clamp
This invention relates to a scaffolding clamp.
Conventional clamps for attaching scaffolding poles to beams generally comprise a split circular clamp for attachment to the pole together with a half C shaped member and a bolt threaded through the arm of the C which can be tightened up against the beam to retain the beam against the scaffold pole. Such a layout has the disadvantage that the integrity of the structure relies on the single point fixing between the fixing bolt and the beam. In certain situations it is possible for the clamp to be displaced.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a scaffolding clamp comprising a clamp body generally C shaped in cross-section and having a slot for receiving a scaffolding pole, a support sleeve on the clamp for engaging a pole and adjustment means for biasing the support sleeve towards an arm of the clamp body for clamping a pole and a beam together.
Preferably the adjustment means comprises a bolt retained on the support sleeve and threaded through the clamp body.
Preferably also the support sleeve comprises an elongate part circular member.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Fig. 1 is a part sectional side view of a first embodiment of a clamp in accordance with the present invention in use;

Fig. 6 is a plan sectional view of the clamp taken along line BB of Fig. 4;

Fig. 2;
Fig. 9 is an end view of the support sleeve of Fig. 8;
Fig. 10 is a side view of an adjusting bolt of the clamp of
Fig. 2; and
Fig. 11 is a side view of positioning bolt of the clamp of
Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, a simple scaffolding clamp of the invention comprises a C shaped body 1 and a support sleeve 2. An adjusting bolt 3 and a positioning bolt 4 extend through one arm 5 of the body 1 and a compression pad 6 is attached to the other arm 7 of the body 1.
A circlip, not shown, retains the positioning bolt 4 in a socket in the support sleeve 2.
The apparatus is used to clamp a scaffolding pole 8 onto a beam 9. The body 1 slots over the pole 8 and the arm 7 fits over the side of the H beam 9. By adjusting the adjusting bolt 3 and positioning bolt 4, the support sleeve 2 is brought into contact with the pole 8 and tightened against it. This has the effect of retaining the pole 8 and H beam 9 together. The compression pad 6 spreads the load between the arm 7 of the clamp body 1 and the beam 9 and this together with the gripping of the pole 8 by the support beam 2 ensures that the likelihood of the clamp slipping is minimised.
The positioning of the adjusting bolt 3 and positioning bolt 4 below the pole 8 allows for easy fitment of the clamp in use.
The basic layout of the clamp can be modified to provide clamps having varying load capacity and also to allow fitment to different layouts and sizes of scaffolding structures.
For example the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 2 to 11 is an improved version of the scaffolding clamp with various modifications incroporated for production purposes. The basic construction of the clamp is however identical to the
Fig. 1 embodiment and like parts are therefore accorded like reference numerals. In this embodiment the circlip 10 for retaining the positioning bolt 4 can be seen and a plug 11 in a socket 12 in the support sleeve 2 is engaged by the adjusting bolt 3. Strengthening webs 13 are also included on the clamp 1.
