Description
DOORS AND METHODS OF ENSURING THEIR SECURITY
The present invention relates to a door and to methods of ensuring the security of doors.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a door comprising a surrounding frame member, and a lower panel carried by said frame member and defining within said frame member a top opening in the door, and further comprising connection means carried by said frame for releasahly securing a top panel member across said top opening to close said top opening.
Such a door will generally be used as a secondary door to be fitted externally of a main access door.
In use, this external secondary door may well be kept in a closed position whilst the normal access door is left open. Thus, if no top panel member is secured to said connection means, access through the doorway is barred by the lower panel, whilst air and light is able to enter through the top opening. It is also possible to see callers through the top opening whilst denying them access.
Preferably, the door is provided with one or more top panel members which can be secured to said frame member by said releasable connection means. The or each said top panel member may comprise a frame having co-operable means arranged to releasably engage with said connection means. Said frame may support an air permeable insect screen material such as plastics or fabric net so that the top panel member comprises an insect screen. When this insect screen is secured to the frame member of the door it will enable the circulation of air, and the ingress of light whilst preventing the entry of insects.
Additionally and/or alternatively, a top panel member may be provided in which the panel frame supports a transparent material, such as glass or clear plastics material. In this embodiment, the secondary door is solid, but enables callers to be seen. In one embodiment, the glass may be one-way only such that whilst callers are visible, they will not be able to see through the door.
Additionally and/or alternatively, a top panel member may be provided whose frame supports an anti-intrusion material, such as a metal lattice.
Furthermore, a top panel member may be provided which is in the form of a solid panel, for example, of wood or metal, carrying co-operable means for releasable engagement with said connection means on the door frame member. When such a solid panel is affixed to the door frame member, the door becomes an effective storm door to protect the normal access door against inclement weather and also to increase the security of the normal access door.
In a preferred embodiment the connection means carried by said door frame member comprise a plurality of mounting pegs fixed to the frame member. Each said mounting peg is arranged to be a press fit in a corresponding hole provided in said top panel member.
Preferably, each mounting peg is slotted to enable its compression, the peg being made of a resilient material so that it can return to its non-compressed state.
The present invention also extends to a method of ensuring the security of an access door, comprising
providing a secondary door which extends in its closed position across the exterior of said access door, and
providing lock means for securing said secondary door in its closed position, wherein said lock means are operable from with said access door.
Preferably, said secondary door is a door as defined above.
The present invention also extends to a locking device for a secondary door, comprising an elongate shaft which carries at one end a lever and at its other end a locking bar, wherein said lever and said locking bar are each elongate and each extend substantially at right angles to said elongate shaft, and said lever and said bar are arranged mutually at right angles.
Preferably, the length of said shaft is sufficient to extend through and project beyond a door frame.
The locking bar is arranged to be received within a suitable housing such that rotation of the bar about the axis of the shaft moves the locking bar in the housing between a locked and an unlocked position. In the unlocked position said locking bar is arranged to extend substantially vertically with said lever extending substantially horizontally.
The locking device is preferably arranged such that the elongate shaft extends through the door frame of a conventional access door. In this case, the lever is provided on the inside of the access door and in its horizontal position it is arranged to prevent opening of said access door. By this simple means, it can thus be ensured that if the secondary door is unlocked, opening of the interior access door is prevented, whilst if the secondary door is locked, opening of the access door is enabled.
In ar embodiment, said locking bar is engagable in a housing. One wall of the housing has an opening through which the bar in one orientation can pass.
However, the opening is arranged such that in a second orientation of the locking bar, passage of the locking bar through the opening is prevented. In a preferred embodiment, alarm means are mounted in said housing.
Said locking bar is arranged to complete an alarm circuit when in one of its orientations and to break the alarm circuit in a second orientation.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a door having a lock housing in combination with a locking bar, said lock housing having an opening for the selective passage therethrough of said locking bar, wherein in one orientation the locking bar is enabled to pass through said opening into and out of said housing, but in a second orientation passage of the locking bar through said opening is prevented, and further comprising electrical contact means provided in said housing and arranged to be engaged by said locking bar in one of its orientations such that movement of said locking bar between its orientations is arranged to open and close an electrical circuit.
The locking bar itself may form part of the electrical circuit. Alternatively, the electrical contact means may comprise a switch arranged to be opened and closed by said locking bar.
The electrical circuit could comprise indicating means for displaying the condition or state of the locking bar in the housing. Additionally and/or alternatively, the electrical circuit may comprise an alarm circuit.
Embodiments of the present invention will hereinafter be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows schematically the provision of a secondary door on a main access door,
Figure 2 shows a side elevation of a locking device for the secondary door,
Figure 3 shows a plan view, in the locked position, of the locking device of Figure 2, and
Figure 4a and 4b show fragmentary views of a further locking device incorporating an alarm, the locking device being shown in the unlocked position in
Figure 4a and in the locked position in Figure 4b.
Figure 1 shows schematically a secondary door 2 secured by way of hinges 20 to the existing door frame 1 of a main access door 21. This secondary door 2 comprises a tubular metal, box section frame member 17 of similar dimensions to those of the existing door frame 1. A lower panel 11 is carried by said frame member 17 and defines therewith in a top opening 23 in the secondary door 2. Adjacent the top opening 23, the frame member 17 of the secondary door 2 is provided with connection means 24 for releasably securing a top panel member 14 to the frame member 17 to close said top opening 23. In this respect, the connection means may comprise resilient pegs 24 arranged to engage in appropriate holes (not shown) in the top panel member 14. Suitable connection means are illustrated, for example, in my co-pending application No. 2196677.
The top panel member 14 comprises a frame 26 carrying or supporting an insert material. For example, this material could be an air permeable insect screen material such as plastics or fabric net whereby the top panel member 14 forms an insect screen. Alternatively, the top panel member 14 could be a vision panel, the frame 26 supporting perspex or other clear plastics material or a glass panel. If required, the glass could be one way glass.
Additionally, the top panel member 14 could be a solid panel.
In use, the secondary door 2 may well be kept in its closed position whilst the main access door 21 is left open. If no top panel member 14 is secured to said connection means 24, access through the doorway is barred by the lower panel 11, whilst air and light is able to enter through the top opening 23. It is also possible to see callers through the top opening whilst denying them access.
When a top panel member 14 in the form of an insect screen is secured to the frame member 17 of the door, it will enable the circulation of air, and the ingress of light whilst preventing the entry of insects.
If a top panel member 14 having a transparent material insert material is secured to the frame member 17 it will be appreciated that the secondary door 2 is solid, but enables callers to be seen. If the insert material is one-way glass callers will be visible but will be unable to see through the door.
A top panel member 14 may also be provided whose frame 26 supports an anti-intrusion material, such as a metal lattice (not shown).
The top panel member may be provided in the form of a solid panel (not shown), for example, of wood or metal, carrying co-operable means for releasable engagement with said pegs 24. When such a solid panel is affixed to the door frame member 17, the door 2 becomes an effective storm door to protect the normal access door against inclement weather and also to increase the security of the normal access door.
The main access door 21, for example to a house, is provided with a normal handle 27 and a lock 28. In the embodiment illustrated, when the secondary door 2 is closed the solid panel 11 masks the handle 27 and lock 28 and thereby prevents access to the handle and lock from the exterior. Where the main access door 21 has a lock which would not normally be covered by the lower panel 11, a metal shielding plate, indicated at 29, could be carried by the frame member 17 to shield the lock or any other vulnerable area of the main door 21.
A locking device is provided for locking the secondary door 2 in its closed position. This locking device is actuable from inside the main access door 21. The locking device, which is shown in more detail in Figures 2 and 3 comprises an elongate shaft 4 carrying a lever 3 at one end thereof and a locking bar 5 at the other end thereof. It will be seen, that both the lever 3 and the locking bar 5 are elongate and that each extends substantially at right angles to said shaft 4. Furthermore, said lever 3 and said locking bar 5 extends mutually at right angles.
The lever 3 is situated on the interior of the main door 21 and the elongate shaft 4 is mounted to extend through the door frame 1 and to project relative to the exterior side of this door frame 1.
It will be seen that the shaft 4 is resiliently mounted relative to the door frame 1 by way of a spring 10. An elongate slot 6 is formed in the frame member 17 of the secondary door 2 and is arranged to enable access for the locking bar 5 into the interior of the frame member 17 which serves as a lock housing.
It will be seen that the slot 6 extends substantially vertically and that in the unlocked position of the locking device the locking bar 5 similarly extends substantially vertically. In this position, and as is clearly illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, the lever 3 extends horizontally. Naturally, the lever 3 can extend horizontally inwardly as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 and in this position it fouls the frame 9 of the main access door 21, and thereby stops the main door being opened.
Alternatively, the lever 3 could be rotated through 1800 whereby opening of the main door 21 is enabled.
It will be appreciated, that the secondary door 2 can be locked in position by engaging the locking bar 5 in the lock housing provided by frame member 17 by way of the slot 6 and then rotating the shaft 4 by way of the lever 3 such that the locking bar 5 extends substantially horizontally. In this orientation, removal of the locking bar 5 from within the lock housing is prevented. It will also be appreciated that the secondary door 2 has been locked in its position from the interior of the main access door 21.
When the external secondary door 2 has been so locked, the lever 3 extends substantially vertically, to give a visual indication that the secondary door 2 is locked. Futhermore, when in this position, the lever 3 does not prevent opening of the main door 21.
Therefore, and as described above, the inner main door 21 could, if required, be opened to allow light and/or air to enter whilst the secondary door 2 securely denies access to callers.
The door shown schematically in Figure 1 is provided with an alarm circuit comprising a pressure actuator 12 carried by the secondary door 2 and contact means 13 provided in the existing door frame 1. As illustrated, the pressure actuator 12 is a simple rod and the contact means 13 is provided in a bore in the fixed frame 1. It will be understood that if the rod 12 is arranged to complete an alarm circuit when correctly positioned in the bore 13, tampering with the external door whereby this circuit is broken can be utilised to sound an alarm.
Figure 4 shows an alternative alarm circuit which is associated with the locking device. Figures 4a and 4b show a section of the metal frame member 17 of the secondary door 2 showing the slot 6 provided therein for receipt of the locking bar 5. It will be seen that an insulating mounting block 16 is suitably mounted in the lock housing such that an electrical circuit terminal 15 extends within the lock housing defined in the frame member 17. In the unlocked position of the locking device as illustrated in
Figure 4a, there is no connection between the terminal 15 and the locking bar 5. However, rotation of the shaft 4 to rotate the locking bar 5 into the locked position of Figure 4b brings the locking bar 5 into contact with the terminal 15. In the embodiment illustrated, the locking bar 5 and the metal shaft 4 are used to form part of an electrical alarm circuit which, if broken, will cause an alarm to be sounded.
Of course, it would be possible alternatively, for the locking bar 5 to contact a pressure switch to make or break the alarm circuit.
Preferably, the locking device is provided with means (not shown) indicating the condition of the lock. This indication could be by way of mechanical device covered or uncovered by the lever 3 or could be an electrically operated device giving a visual or audible signal when the locking bar 5 is engaged in its locked position. Of course, the alarm circuit could be ony one of the normal types of audible and/or visible alarms.
It will be appreciated that variations or modifications in the invention as described above may be made within the scope of the present invention.
