Description
A SHROUD
The invention relates to a shroud, particularly a shroud for a machine such as a drill used to drill a hole in or through a substrate such as a wall.
Holes are often required to be drilled through walls such as those in domestic dwellings, the holes being for the installation of balanced flue exhaust ducts of domestic heating appliances which are installed subsequently to the erection of a building of which the wall forms a part and which building is occupied at the time formation of the hole in the wall is to take place. Drills such as rotary percussion drills have been used for the hole formation, but such drills are slow and noisy and are in any event more suited to industrial applications.
Core drill bits are preferable for domestic applications in that they provide a relatively rapid drilling of a hole with minimum damage to the surrounding wall. It is also possible to drill a hole from inside a building to the outside through an external wall with little danger of the core falling out of the core drill bit.
It will be understood that this is particularly valuable in multi-storey buildings, or where access from the outside is difficult. A core drill bit such as this however has a tendency in use to produce a large amount of dust which can be disadvantageous where a hole is being drilled from inside a domestic dwelling room.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigiate this disadvantage.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a shroud for use with a machine for drilling a hole in a substrate such as a wall, comprising a tubular body, a device at one end for securing the shroud to the substate in use, a device at or adjacent the opposite end for acceptance of the machine or a part thereof, and a connection adapted for mounting an extraction unit on the shroud and for connecting the interior of the shroud with the extraction unit in use.
The connection may be on the body intermediate the ends thereof.
This provides for simplicity of connection of the extraction device in use.
The connection may comprise a tubular spigot, which provides a simple push-fit connection.
The body may be cylindrical and the device at the opposite end may comprise a ring of less diameter than the diameter of the body.
This construction provides for a snug fit with a drill part.
The ring may be removably mountable on the body. This provides for interchanging of rings for accommodation of different size drill bits.
The ring may be removably mountable on the body by a bolt and wing nut arrangement.
The ring may comprise a synthetic plastic material.
The device at the one and/or opposite end may include a seal, for example a foam ring seal.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a core-drilling machine for drilling a hole in a substrate such as a wall, in combination with a shroud as hereinbefore defined.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of drilling a hole in a substrate such as a wall, comprising providing a core-drilling machine, providing a shroud as hereinbefore defined, securing the shroud to the substrate by the flange at one end, connecting up an extraction device to the connection, inserting the drill bit in the opposite end of the shroud, and drilling a hole through the substrate with the extraction device switched on.
Embodiments of shroud are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of a first embodiment of shroud according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a schematic perspective view of a second embodiment of shroud according to the invention;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the shroud of Fig. 2 from one end;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the shroud of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the shroud of Fig. 2 from the other end.
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts refer to like numerals, Fig. 1 shows a shroud 1 for use with a machine such as a core-drilling machine (not shown) for drilling a hole in a substrate such as a wall (also not shown) the shroud 1 comprising a tubular body or chamber 2, a device 3 at one end for mounting the shroud on the substrate (wall) in use, a device 4 at or adjacent the opposite end for acceptance of the machine or part thereof, and a connection 5 adapted for mounting an extraction unit (also not shown) on the shroud 1 and for connecting the interior of the shroud 1 with the extraction unit in use.
The connection 5 in the form of a tubular spigot is intermediate the length of the shroud 1, that is between the ends thereof. The tubular body 2 is made of sheet metal and is right cylindrical in the embodiment shown, the device 4 at the opposite end comprising a synthetic plastic ring such as a Perspex ring which is removably mountable on the body by a bolt and wing nut arrangement 6 comprising opposite bolts and nuts, there being a foam seal ring 7 mounted on the opposite end of the body. The device 3 at the one end comprises a flange through which there are holes 8 (of which one is shown) by which the shroud 1 may be offered up to a wall mounted thereon and secured thereto by bolts passing through the holes 8. There is seal means in the form of a foam seal ring 9 on the flange 8 on the side thereof remote from the spigot 5.
In use to drill a hole using a core dill, a suitable ring 4 is mounted on the opposite end using the bolts and nuts 6 and an extraction device such as a vacuum cleaner is connected with the spigot 5 by say a push-fit hose connection. The shroud 1 is mounted on the wall at the position where the hole is to be drilled, and the core drill machine is inserted in the opposite end past the ring 4 and foam seal 7 and switched on, as is the vacuum cleaner, so that a core is drilled out of the wall by the core drill bit. The vacuum cleaner extracts dust from the drilling operation which cannot escape from the body 2 past the seals at the ends.
The ring 4 may be interchanged with a ring 10 for accommodating a different size drill by loosening the wing nuts at 6, removing the ring, mounting the ring on the bolts and securing in place with the wing nuts.
Referring now to Figs. 2-5, the shroud 20 shown is virtually identical to the shroud 1, and operates in an identical way during core bit drilling, the difference being that the rings 4, 10 are replaced by a fixed flange 21 which in the embodiment shown has a centre hole 12 diameter of 158mm, less than that of the diameter of the body 2, which hole 22 diameter is suitable for use with all core drills sized 152mm and below. The flange 21 has a foam ring seal as before.
As the construction and operation of shroud 20 is otherwise identical to that of the shroud 1 the description thereof will not be repeated.
In both embodiments, 1 20 the drill bit may be a Nimbus core drill bit and the machine an AEG 1000 Watt. drill.
