Description
Adapter for connecting a tool holder to a hand drill, using an angled torque and impact transmitting means
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention
The present invention pertains to a device for connecting a drill bit to a drill in such a manner that the usefulness of such equipment is largely improved. By means of the invention it will be possible to drill holes in difficult positions quite close to and parallel to a wall, a ceiling, a floor or a similar building structure.
Background
The requirement for holes in corners of a structure, close to and parallel to a surface of such structure, arises in particular when electric cables or pipings should be laid in a neat manner in housings. With equipment which is available at the present time, a drilled hole parallel to a surface of the structure must be spaced from such surface by a minimum distance determined by the dimensions of the drill used.
Flexible connections or extenders for electric hand drills are known from inter alia DE 31 00 336, US 2 487 203 and US 2 747 384, and are marketed for drilling, grinding and polishing, in particular for hobby purposes. These flexible connections or extenders are indeed useful for their purposes in that the drill bit end is freely movable so that one may drill holes in locations which are not easily accessible. However, this equipment is also encumbered with some disadvantages. When using such flexible connections or extenders, the drill bit is connected to the extender by means of a chuck and because of the "normal" dimensions of such chucks, the deficiencies of the earlier described equipment with regards to spacing from a surface are not remedied, and also, the parallelity to the adjacent surface is not ascertained. Furthermore, the disadvantage of such flexible connections becomes even more obvious when remembering that these connections are not capable of transferring such impact-
function of hammer drills which will be required when drilling in concrete or similar materials.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a mounting device for connecting a drill bit to a hand drill, to allow drilling through one of two adjoining surfaces, parallel to and with insignificant spacing from the other of said surfaces, which mounting device comprises a rigid arm which at its one end is provided with means for attachment to the said hand drill and at its other end provides a journal for a tap intended to carry the drill bit. Further features of the invention, and the advantages achieved therewith, will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 exemplifies various required bores quite close to and parallel to surfaces meeting each other, e.g. wall, ceiling and floor surfaces;
Fig. 2 shows a hand drill before being equipped with the device of the present invention; and
Figs. 3 and 4 show two embodiments of a hand drill provided with the drill bit mounting device of this invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In Fig. 1 several desired locations of drilled holes are shown, located in the corners between adjacent walls, between a wall and a ceiling and between a wall and a floor, the drilled holes extending parallel to one of such adjacent surfaces and quite close to same. Such location of drilled holes may be highly desirable in order to achieve a neat laying of electric cables or pipings extending e.g. between rooms in a building.
Fig. 2 shows a hand drill 1 used in drilling a hole parallel to the surface of e.g. a wall 2 and through e.g. a floor or other horisontal division 3. Due to the dimensions of
the drill 1 and the drill bit 4 being mounted directly to the drill 1 by means of a chuck 5, there will be a minimum achievable distance between the hole drilled with the drillbit 4 and the wall 2, which minimum distance is symbolised with the letter A.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a hand drill 1 with a drillbit 4 is provided with a mounting device, to be described below, whereby a hole may be drilled which is parallel to a wall or other surface 2 (or 3) and with no significant spacing from such surface, and whereby the drilling may be effected with or without an impact hammering function.
The mounting device of the invention consists of a rigid arm 6 which at one end is provided with a collar 7 or the like for attaching the arm 6 to the drill 1. At the other end the arm 6 is provided with a journal means 8 for a tap 9 to which the drillbit 4 is connected. The journalled tap 9 is connected to the chuck 5 of the drill 1 by means of rigid connecting rods 10 and one or two universal joints 11 (Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, respectively) . The drillbit 4 is attached to the journalled tap 9 in any convenient manner at 12, e.g. by a conical male/female connection means. The journalled tap 9 may be axially locked relative to the journal means 8 and thus relative to the entire mounting device by means of a locking ring or the like 13, as a retainer for the journalled tap 9 upon withdrawal of the the drillbit 4 from its drilled hole.
In an embodiment not show, suitable for drilling in wood or the like, the connection 10, 11 between the chuck 5 and the journalled tap 9 may be replaced by a flexible connection known per se. With such embodiment, as in those shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the desired parallelity of and closeness of the drilled hole relative to an adjacent surface is achieved, but this alternative embodiment is not suitable for transferring an impact-hammering effect which is of course not required when drilling in wood or the like.
