Abstract
A method of laying bricks comprises placing and locating a skeletal strip (10, 11) having spacing elements thereon upon one course of bricks in such position that some (16) of the spacing elements form a spacing support for the next course of bricks, some (17) of the spacing elements locate and space adjacent bricks of the next course along the length of that course and some (18, 20) of the spacing elements locate the bricks of the next course widthwise relative to the previous course; and then applying mortar and the next course of bricks to be so located. Spacing elements 17 may be removably and adjustably mounted on the members 10, 11, as may spacing elements 18, 20. Elements 18, 20 may be provided with weakened portions so that they may be broken off after the wall is complete, leaving the remainder embedded in the mortar joint. Strips 10, 11 may be connected to further strips 10, 11. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE LAYING OF BRICKS
This invention relates to a method of and means for assisting in the laying of building bricks.
It has been proposed to lay bricks using a method which comprises spacing successive courses of bricks horizontally from each other and vertically within each course by placing spacing elements on one course of bricks and applying the next course of bricks upon the spacing elements.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved method and means for so laying bricks.
Accordingly in one aspect, the present invention provides a method of laying bricks comprising placing a skeletal strip having spacing elements thereon upon one course of bricks in such a position that some of the spacing elements form a spacing support for the next course, some of the spacing elements locate and space adjacent bricks of the net course along that course and some of the spacing elements locate the bricks of the next course widthwise relative to the previous course; and then applying mortar and the next course of bricks to be so located.
In a further aspect, the present invention provides skeletal a strip for use in such a method comprising a pair of longitudinal members parallel to each other, transverse members connecting the parallel members together, upstanding first spacing elements on which the bricks of the next course may stand proud of the parallel members, upstanding second spacing elements which enter between adjacent bricks in the next course, outwardly and upwardly extending third spacing elements which locate bricks of the next course widthwise, and outwardly and downwardly extending fourth spacing elements which locate the strip widthwise in relation to a preceding course of bricks.
In order to promote a fuller understanding of the above and other aspects of the present invention some embodiments will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment of a skeletal strip having spacing elements,
Figure 2, 2A & 2B shows a plan view and detail views of a second embodiment of a skeletal strip having spacing elements,
Figure 3 shows schematically, the strip of Figure 2 in use,
Figures 4 and 4A show a side and end view of adjustable spacing elements for use with the strip of Figure 2 between bricks of a course, and
Figures 5, 5A and 5B show a side and detail view of a spacing elements for use with the strip of Figure 2 to locate it widthwise upon a course of bricks and so to locate the next course.
The skeletal strip of Figure 1 comprises two members 10, 11 parallel to each other and spaced apart by less than the width of a brick and connected together by transverse members 13.
First upstanding spacing elements 16 are provided integral with the parallel members 10, 11. The bricks of a course are placed on the members 16 which space the bricks from the preceding course of bricks a distance suitable for a normal mortar bed. Second upstanding spacing elements 17 are in the form of T-pieces with the heads parallel with the members 10, 11 and these will enter between adjacent bricks of the net course and locate these bricks longitudinally.
The elements 17 are therefore spaced from each other by a distance equal to the length of a brick.
Outwardly and upwardly extending third spacing elements 18 integral with the members 10, 11 serve to locate bricks of the next course widthwise.
Outwardly and downwardly extending fourth spacing elements 20 serve to locate the strip and thus the nest course in relation to the preceding course of bricks. The upwardly and downwardly extending portions of the elements 18 and 20 may be broken off when a wall has been built and to facilitate this frangible or waisted regions may be provided at the proximal ends of said upwardly and downwardly extending portions.
The strips may be made of metal or plastics material and each strip may be of a length corresponding to any desired number of bricks.
Figure 2 shows a second embodiment similar to that of
Figure 1 in which the second, third and fourth spacing elements are adjustable on the strip. Similar parts serving the same purpose as in Figure 1 are given the same reference numerals. Figure 2A shows the first spacing elements 16 in detail and Figure 2B shows how the members 10 and 11 of two strips may be joined together by reduced thickness portions 30,31 on the members 10 and 11 and pegs 32 one of the members co-operating with holes 33 in the other of the members at those reduced portions.
In the embodiment of Figure 2, the second spacing elements 40 shown in detail in Figures 4 and 4A are removably and adjustably mounted on the members 10 and 11.
Pairs of elements 40 are connected together by a bridging member 41 which has notches by which it and the spacing elements 40 may be located and held on the member 10 and 11.
The third and fourth spacing elements 50 and 51 shown in detail in Figures 5, 5A and 5B, are also removably and adjustably mounted on the members 10 and 11. Pairs of elements 50 and 51 are formed integrally with a mounting member 52 which is provided with a series of notches 53, by each of which it can be located, in a respective position widthwise of the bricks on the members 10 and 11. The elements 50 and 51 may be removed after a wall has been built and to facilitate this the top edge of the member 52 is rounded as shown at 5A, so that the member may be twisted; and the member 52 is weakened as shown at 55 to break off when so twisted for removal.
Figure 3 shows the embodiment of Figures 2, 4 and 5 in use between two courses 60, 61 of bricks 62, with the first elements 16 spacing the bricks of the two courses vertically apart, the second elements 40 spacing the bricks lengthwise within each course, the third elements 50 locating the bricks of the next or upper course 60 widthwise and the elements 51 locating the members 10 and 11 and thus all the other elements relative to the previous or lower course 61.
