Abstract
A cake box comprises a circular base (10), conveniently of expanded polystyrene, one or more, preferably two, strips (12, 13) of flexible material, such as cardboard, formed into a cylindrical wall (11) mounted on the base, and a separate lid (14). The strips (12, 13) are joined together by tongue and slit connections. <IMAGE>
Description
A cake box
This invention relates to a cake box and apparatus for making the cake box.
It is known to provide a one-piece blank with appropriate fold lines so that the blank can be formed into a cake box of cuboidal shape at a retail outlet. Such blanks are easy to store but for larger cakes, e.g. birthday and wedding cakes, cylindrical boxes are often preferred.
It is known to provide cylindrical cake boxes which comprises a circular base having a cylindrical flange upstanding from and secured to the base, and a circular lid secured to a cylindrical wall which fits over the cylindrical flange and which rests at its lower end on the circular base. The flange is secured to the base by glue and by a sheet of paper glued to the base and the flange, the sheet of paper being provided on the underside of the base and passing around the edge of the base, up along the outer surface of the flange and down along the inner surface of the flange. The cylindrical wall is secured to the circular lid in similar fashion. Such boxes are bulky to store at retail outlets and manufacture of these boxes is labour intensive.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a cake box comprising a circular base, one or more strips of flexible material which can be formed into a cylindrical wall mountable on the base, and a separate lid.
Preferred and/or optional features of the first aspect of the invention are set forth in claims 2-9, inclusive.
Accroding to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided apparatus for forming a cake box, comprising a circular base, one or more strips of flexible material which can be formed into a cylindrical wall mountable on the base, and a separate lid.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a cake box in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 shows a strip forming part of the wall of the cake box of Figure 1.
Preferring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the cake box shown therein comprises a circular base 10, preferably of substantially non-flexible material such as expanded polystyrene, a cylindrical wall 11 formed from two elongate strips 12 and 13 of flexible material, e.g.
cardboard, and a separate lid 14, conveniently of cardboard.
The base 10 has an upstanding lip 15, and a stepped outer edge 16 for locating the cylindrical wall 11 relative to the base 10.
The strips 12 and 13 have tongue and slit connecting means comprising a tongue 17 at one end of each strip 12, 13 and a transverse slit 18 in each strip 12, 13 adjacent to the other end thereof, each tongue 17 passing through a slit 18 in the other strip from the outside to the inside thereof.
Although the provision of two strips 12 and 13 is preferred as a compromise between size and ease of assembly, the wall 11 could be formed from just one elongate strip or from more than two strips.
The lid 14 has an integral peripheral flange 19 which fits over the wall 11.
In order to pack a cake 21, the cake 21 is first placed on the base 10, the wall 11, which is assembled in situ from the strips 12 and 13, is located on the base 10, and the lid 14 is then placed on the wall 11. The base 10, wall 11, and lid 14 are then tied together by string and four equi-angularly spaced notches 20 are provided in the base 10 for locating the string.
The cake box described above is easy to store and assemble in situ in a cake shop or other retail outlet selling cakes.
The embodiment described above is given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.
Claims (8)
