Abstract
The timepiece, e.g. a watch, comprises a first casing (10) containing a timepiece movement (11) and an analogue or digital time display (12, 13, 14), and a second casing (15) larger than the first casing. The first casing (10) is housed in the second casing (15) for movement therein and the second casing (15) has a transparent window (19) for viewing the time display in the first casing (10). The second casing may contain a liquid (21, Figure 2, not shown) to dampen movement of the first casing in the second casing. <IMAGE>
Description
A timepiece
This invention relates to a timepiece.
According to the invention there is provided a timepiece comprising a first casing containing a timepiece movement and means for displaying time, and a second casing larger than the first casing, the first casing being housed in the second casing for movement therein and the second casing having a transparent window in one face thereof for viewing the time display means in the first casing.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrist watch embodying the invention, and
Figure 2 is a section along line II-II of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown therein a wrist watch comprising a first casing 10 containing a timepiece movement 11 and means for displaying time in the form of a dial 12 and hour and minute hands 13 and 14, respectively, driven by the movement 11. The wrist watch also comprises a second casing 15 larger than the first casing 10, the first casing 10 being housed in the second casing 15 for movement therein.
Each casing 10, 15 has a body part 16, 17, respectively, and a transparent cover part or crystal 18, 19, respectively. As shown both casings 10 and 15 are of circular cross-section but this is not essential. A strap or bracelet 20 is attached to the casing 15.
The casing 10 is slidably movable in casing 15.
As shown casing 15 is filled with liquid 21 to dampen movement of the casing 10 in the casing 15. The liquid 21 can be colourless or of any desired colour.
The casing 15 does not have to contain a liquid; instead the casing 10 could be freely movable in the casing 15 or could be attached to the casing 15 such as by one or more flexible elongate elements or springs (not shown).
As shown the diameter of the casing 10 is less than the radius of the casing 15 but this is by no means essential.
As shown the time display is of the analogue kind and in this case some means of identifying the angular orientation of the dial 12 is desirable, in this particular case by the indicia 'XII' marked on the dial. However, the time display could be of the digital kind employing LED's or liquid crystal.
As shown the whole of the cover part 19 of the casing 15 is transparent so that the time display in the casing 10 can be viewed regardless of the position of the casing 10 in the casing 15. However, part of the cover part 19 could be translucent or opaque sometimes requiring the casing 10 to be moved, such as by shaking, relative to the casing 15 before the time display can be viewed.
Various other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims. In particular the invention is not confined to watches, it may be applied also to clocks and other timepieces.
Claims (6)
1. A timepiece comprising a first casing containing a timepiece movement and means for displaying time, and a second casing larger than the first casing, the first casing being housed in the second casing for movement therein and the second casing having a transparent window in one face thereof for viewing the time display means in the first casing.
2. A timepiece as claimed in claim 1, wherein the transparent window in the second casing allows the time display means to be viewed regardless of the position of the first casing in the second casing.
3. A timepiece as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the second casing contains a liquid to dampen the movement of the first casing in the second casing.
4. A timepiece as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first and second casings are of circular cross-section.
5. A timepiece as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in the form of a wrist watch.
6. A timepiece substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
